Synopsis
Get your kicks on '66 - an offbeat travel guide for the adventurous American wanderer. This is a wonderfully off-the-wall travel companion to the most famous road in the world, featuring offbeat attractions, fascinating artefacts and icons and Uber-kitschy tourist traps! Route 66 is the most famous, one of the longest and certainly one of the most bonkers roads in the world. Immortalised in film and song, its red-and-white interstate badge perhaps the best-known piece of road furniture on the planet, this artery of the great American Road Trip has attracted fascinated travellers and lunatic pilgrims from just about everywhere. Most tourist guides will mention Route 66 - as a means to get to Los Angeles from Chicago, with a footnote to the effect that it is also known as the "High Street of America" or "The Mother Road". Some will throw out a few interesting facts about films that have been made in its environs or songs that have contributed to its legend. A few more may have a sidebar or a jazzy information box suggesting a couple of things the road-weary traveller might want to do along its thousands of miles of blacktop.

Virtually none will have the wealth of fascinating information and incredible locations featured in the "Route 66 Adventure Handbook", a guide that turns the Great American Highway into a holiday in itself. Painstakingly researched, it contains information on unmarked portions of the old highway; contact information for Route 66 associations and local travel bureaux; maps and other navigational aids; an index of all Route 66 towns; plus anecdotes, trivia, attractions and suggested side trips. So fuel up and get rollin'!

Boring1
This book bored the head of me. Its all text, black and white photos and he can spend over 40 pages talking about small towns that have a 'museum' or a bridge. I'm still waiting to take my first route 66 trip and I think the best way to do it is unprepared and unplanned, I learned my lesson. I'd say if you are looking for a route 66 planner and you have never been, get a book with maps and decent photos.

Informative and easygoing...4
I bought this bought last year before embarking on a tour of Route 66 - Found it a useful companion along the way - Detailing many of the smaller, more subtle aspects of the mother road. Has useful Town by Town breakdowns and good recommendations on hotels, restaurants, bars etc
