An excellent guide to a little-known country!5
This book proved invaluable on a recent holiday in Macedonia. The book's strengths are certainly on eating and drinking, accommodation and out-of-the way sights. For example, the suggestion to visit Prilep if one wants to see a "typical" Macedonian town was excellent. The language section is also good - much better than the Lonely Planet Eastern Europe Phrasebook which is the only other Macedonian language pocket-book that I could find. One minor point is that more detail on specific sights (for example, there were only a few lines on the Painted Mosque in Tetovo) and better maps could be included. Overall, however, this book is practically everything a guide book should be!

Not very good, but its all there is3
If you have to go to Macedonia & need a guide book, then the chances are, this is all you have available in English. It may not be as well written as other Bradt guides & its coverage of certain features seem to be patchy ,seemimgly dependent upon the authors priorities & opinions, but you dont have much choice. Its a start, but Bradt should do better with guide like this. In its ( limited ) field, its the leader.Unless you need it urgently, wait until Travel professionals have re-edited the book for a revised & more comprehensive 2nd edition.

As complete as could be! 5
I bought this item as I am planning to visit a friend in Macedonia and I wanted to prepare well for going. This guide tells you so much about the land that it feels as if you've already been there. Not such a surprise maybe when you know that the author has lived in the country herself for half a decade and has travelled arround quite a bit too. The first half deals with all the typical things you can expect in this country, dealing with the people, the climate, money, customs, language, people groups, transport, prices, accomodation, using the Internet, opening times and how to behave as a guest in a way that will be appreciated etc. and the second half of the book gives a lot of information about different areas and many towns, all over the country. It tells you how to go about when you want to participate in a whole list of activities, like hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, visiting ancient archeological sites, buying stuff, etc. It includes many helpful maps too. To put a long story short: A VERY GOOD GUIDE and not expensive at all! It's not a small book, but this one is going to stay in my hand bag at all times!
