yada yada fun
I bought this for my 10 year old and he thinks it's great fun. However the length of recording is very short and each new recording deletes the previous one which he finds a little frustrating which is why we've only given it 4 stars overall.
Fun toy but didn't appreciate the recording it came with!
This is a fun stocking filler for the kids - it only allows for one recorded message at a time but you can 'warp' the sound to speed it up and slow it down, which is quite funny. I got this for my kids for Christmas but didn't appreciate the message that had been left on it, presumably by however packed it up. I won't offend you by typing here what it said, but suffice it to say that I was very glad that the kids didn't hear it! I managed to record over it - but this may have not been the case, so if you choose to buy, I suggest that you check it before giving it to the kids (or grandma for that matter...)
Ever wanted to sound like a chipmunk?
If you have ever wanted to sound like a chimpmunk, have a yearn to transform your deep voice into something of a higher pitch, or maybe fancy yourself as a dalek impersonator then this is the toy for you.
"Yada Yada Yada" is a cunning little toy which records up to 6 seconds of speech, or any other sound you fancy, as you hold down the "say" button, and then can play it back at the press of a button, cunningly labelled "play". If you hold the little integrated microphone up to your mouth and press the "play" button a little red LED light in the top shows you it is recording, and it beeps once at the start and twice at the end of your recording when you either take your finger off the button or run out of time.
There is a little dial which can be turned to alter the pitch and speed of the recording from very low to extremely fast and silly, or "warp" as they call it. You can turn the dial through all the different pitches as you play, or keep it in one position.
Your recording will be played back as many times as you want on the pressing of play, until you record something else. If you particularly want to keep a recording there is a "lock" button, to save that ever-so-special rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star sung like Daffy Duck.
If this sounds like fun, in practice it is. The packaging of this toy says from 5+, but it is a pretty simple idea and can be enjoyed by younger children and I would think could be quite good fun at parties too.
As you can see from the picture this toy has a bit of a look of an i-gadget about it, it is about the size of a phone (I measured it as 9.5cm by 4.5cm), and comes with a protective rubber surround , which is available in a variety of colours, ours is purple. It takes three LR1130 batteries (provided), and these seem to be quite long lasting on the evidence of the considerable amount of use this toy has had in my house, but could prove quite expensive to replace. Admittedly this toy does have an annoyance factor to it, the play button being pressed repeatedly by a small child can grate after a while, but the small speaker is not too loud, though it might have been nice if you were able to change the volume on this device.
Basically this is, however, one of those toys that can be picked up and played with straight away, once you have wrestled your way into the blister-pack packaging. We have found that this toy has been much enjoyed and the three year old thinks it is the most hilarious thing ever.
There is something appealing for children, and I suppose for any age to be able to record yourself and then change your voice and this toy works well. I have also actually used it in my job where I need to get rather reluctant children to speak, and it really seems to do the job and raise a smile with every child who has seen it.
I think this is a great little gadget, it is simple and does only have one use, but it would make a great small gift and is sure to be carried around in pockets and much played with. It is a robust item and the buttons have quite a good quality feel about them.
I am giving this product 4 stars on the basis that it could do with a longer recording time than 6 seconds, and also it would be nice if it had a strap so it could be attached to a child's rucksack or carried around, I can just about forgive the packaging. Overall however I think "yada yada yada" is a great toy and I'm pretty sure it will get everyone talking!
