fine enough, however...
This 4 disc set is in many way a fine introduction to the works of Ligeti. However, it's been bettered as a "buy first"-item by the new only slightly more expensive "Ligeti Project" box, which has better recordings of some of the large works, and also has much better liner notes written by Ligeti himself.

Great sweep up of Universal Ligeti archives
After diversions to the middle ages and all sorts of other notated music "periods", I have returned to the undoubted genius of Gyorgy Ligeti courtesy of this Deutsche Grammophon 4-CD boxed set.

Although on DG, this set includes Decca and Philips recordings too. We have the Hagen Quartet from 1990, Lasalle Quartet from 1969, the Vienna Phil under Abbado from 1988, Ensemble Intercontemporain and Boulez from 1982, Pierre-Laurent Aimard from 1992, and loads more good stuff here.

Assembled to commemorate Ligeti's death in 2006, all of these recordings are given good/great performances and all are in good sound quality (very important with Ligeti's music).

Pick up the recently re-released Teldec "Ligeti Edition" and the 7 Sony discs and you will have all you need of Ligeti (except his opera).

It would be churlish not to award 5*, so I have!
