Amazon.co.uk Review
Most have agreed that the BBC's decision to revive Doctor Who has proven inspired, with the Christopher Ecclestone-led 'first' series proving a critical and ratings success. Yet when Ecclestone announced he was departing the role after just one season, eyebrows were raised. Could the momentum be kept going for a second series?
Absolutely. The seamless casting of David Tennant as Ecclestone's successor in the TARDIS has been equally inspired, and while it's a fair debate as to whether he matches the standards set by his predecessor, the show rarely lets you draw breath to think about.
This second series collection kicks off with the 2005 Christmas special, which finds the Doctor struggling to overcome the effects of his regeneration, just as the Earth happens to be invaded. It's a smashing episode, and much of the thirteen that follow manage to match it. Particular highlights? There's "School Reunion", which cleverly works old favourites K-9 and Sarah-Jane back into the mix, while "The Girl In The Fireplace" finds the Doctor in a slightly more romantic frame, "The Idiot's Lantern" is a super, snappy episode set just before Coronation Day, while the two part "Impossible Planet" and "Satan Pit" shows just how far you can stretch a BBC budget.
Yet the series will ultimately be remembered for different reasons. The triumphant return for the Cybermen for one, and the depature of Billie Piper's Rose Tyler in the superb final two-parter, which also happens to see two of the Doctor's deadliest foes waging war. And while it's not unfair to say that this series of Doctor Who hasn't been without one or two low moments too, the vast majority of it has been really quite brilliant. Fast, energetic, well-written and cracking entertainment, you're only left wondering how they can top all this next time round --Simon Brew
Synopsis
The complete second series featuring David Tennant as the tenth 'regenerated' Doctor Who. In 'The Christmas Invasion' Christmas trees and seasonal Santa Claus impersonators begin wreaking havoc on the residents of London. Meanwhile the TARDIS lands on Earth with a new Doctor aboard. The Doctor is not yet fully recovered from regeneration. An invasion of the planet threatens mankind and there's only the Prime Minister to battle it out.
Customer Reviews
A whirlwind of tears and fears!
When i first saw David Tennant at the end of series one, i was truly annoyed! I honestly thought he would be boring and not half as good as Christopher Eccleston. But man was i wrong!
David Tennant, despite having a though act to follow, is 100% fantastic as the Doctor. He can range from funny, sarcastic, sexy (oh yes!) and completly heart breaking.
The second series was what really made me get interested in doctor who. Billie Piper is as fabulous as ever, playing the wonderfully chavvy and insightful Rose.
Most of the episodes were of brilliant quality, namely "Girl In The Fireplace" which was utterly fantastic. And Doomsday, which was about Rose if anything else. The perfect acting by both David Tennant and Billie Piper mad it one of the most tearjerking things i have ever seen.
Love and monsters is definatly one of this series low points. Another is School reunion in my opinion, they could have done more with the return of Sarah-Jane and K9.
But overall, brilliant! May David Tennant stay for a long time!
Excellent Value With Loads of Extras
This is a GREAT bargain from Amazon, with the S2 Box Set still retailing at 60-70 quid in the shops (shows how well it sells). Loads of extras (all the "confidentials", plus recording diaries). Very good episodes on top of that (Sarah Jane for the nostalgics), and some great cameo appearances too, make this a great package....and talking of packaging, this has been very professionally done - even better than the S1 set. Overall, very highly recommended.
Good, but in my opinion, the weakest of the three so far
Lots of reviews here are making series two out to be mind blowing, with the exception of a few. In my opinion, this has actually been the weakest of the three "new who" series so far.
The latest series (three) has maintained a good quality throughout and Ok so series one has the odd poor episode here and there- like boom town, or perhaps the slitheen episodes, but moving on to series two and we see an abundance of not so good episodes.
We have zombies infected with "every disease in existence", the doctor and rose being chased by a computer graphic warewolf and making jokes about the queen which quickly become annoying. Later on, we get monsters who look like their mouths are made from minced beef, and a living doodle. The episode "love and monsters", the actual input of the doctor and rose is about as much as being seen chased around "scooby doo style" as the rest of the episode is someones life story, would have been harmless fun, had it have been a spin-off, rather than a proper part of the series.
Thankfully, there where a few reasons to still tune into this series, as it is saved (once again) by the inclusion of old enemies/allies. The cybermen, daleks, K-9 and Sarah Jane Smith all make welcome appearances, in what is otherwise a series that was quickly losing appeal.
Considering however, we are looking at a price of nearly £40, I would much rather cherry pick from the individual "vanilla" releases, and avoid forking out for what is overall, a very up and down series.
