By Jeeves,By Gad,By Good!
I can see why this musical was a flop in (it's original production)in 1975.People were all waiting for a big, lush ALW score, and this isn't that, but it's all the better for not being so.
It does the possibly impossible(yes I know that doesn't make sense)It takes PG Wodehouse and sets him to music, and that shouldn't work, but it does. This ,of course,is due in no small measure in having Andrew Lloyd Webber in partnership with Alan Ayckbourn,so we get music that fits the period(but doesn't sound like the usual ALW) and the wit is retained by Alan Ayckbourn. If you like Salad Days and The Boyfriend, then you will love By Jeeves!
This disc(of the London 1996 production) scores highly on many points,it has the wonderful Wooster of Stephen Pacey, set off by the urbane and ever so slightly condescending Jeeves of Malcolm Sinclair. Not only this but there are several(short) bands of dialogue to link the songs and put the action in context.
You don't get this with the 2001 Broadway recording,so if you don't know the Jeeves/Wooster stories you might be left in the dark. Also(apart from Martin Jarvis) the Broadway cast isn't a patch on the London one.
So save your pennies and buy the London cast recording.

Music to make you laugh
How can the previous reviewer not love 'There's a pig'? I laughed hysterically all the way through the first time I heard it and it still makes me chuckle. I love By Jeeves, it is just the kind of music you cannot resist singing along to and tapping your feet. But the best thing about this recording is the wonderful Steven Pacey as Wooster
Clever interpretation of Wodehouse characters
I was lucky to see this musical in London with this cast. It is not a typical ALW musical which is probably why it wasn't a huge hit. It was a small show with no flash, no spectacular sets or fancy costumes. (It takes place in a church hall, complete with dusty floors and patched curtains.) However, it captures the very British essence of the unflappable Jeeves and the not so bright Bertie Wooster. The story centers around mistaken identities (of course) and star crossed lovers. The CD is narrated by Jeeves and Bertie so you get the gest of the story. The music isn't opulent as the orchestra is small, more of a combo. The songs have clever lyrics and hummable music. Some of my favorites songs are, Travel Hopefully, That Was Nearly Us, and Love's Maze. If you enjoy the Jeeves and Wooster stories, you'll enjoy this musical.
