Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
Footloose is only one of a batch of dance-movies-turned-musicals from the late-'90s, but it's probably the best. Unlike Fame, it gives an audience the movie songs it expects to hear, and unlike Saturday Night Fever, it complements those songs with newly written, honest-to-goodness book songs that support the plot (written by Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow, who wrote songs for the original film). Like the 1984 Kevin Bacon film that inspired it, Footloose follows the story of Ren (Jeremy Kushnier), who moves with his mother (Catherine Cox) to a small town where dancing is prohibited by law. Teens will be teens, of course, so Ren ends up at odds with the town and especially the local minister, Reverend Moore (Stephen Lee Anderson). Along the way, the characters sing familiar songs from the movie ("The Girl Gets Around," "Holding Out for a Hero," "Let's Hear It for the Boy," "Almost Paradise," and of course the title tune), but the new songs are enjoyable as well. Footloose: The Musical doesn't exactly break new ground, but it's an enjoyable listen, particularly if you like the movie. The booklet includes a detailed synopsis, photos, and full lyrics. --David Horiuchi

Fantastic feel good musical soundtrack4
I saw a live performance of this in the UK and immediately fell in love with it. I managed to obtain a sampler with four of the tracks from this on but it still wasn't enough! Footloose, the stage musical, was adapted from the film Footloose, the film. The film was based on the true story of the small town of Elmore City, Oklahoma. Every since the founding of the town (1861)holding public dances had been illegal (no one knew why). Then the students of Elmore City High School wanted to hold a public dance and found themselves up against the church elders. Footloose is a slightly exaggerated retelling of this story. Its a classic story of a stranger coming to a town and changing everyone's lives forever. Its a fantastic story of misunderstanding, prejudice, love and loss. The songs range from breathtaking, foot-tapping (yep it makes you wanna cut footloose!!) to sad and a couple of wonderful love songs. I feel this is one of the most overlooked musicals and i can't work out why! Maybe it is the underlying current of loss (the Reverand has lost his son in a car crash which killed three other teenagers on there way back from a dance - hence dancing was banned)and how affects those within a community. True to the form of the difference between films and stage musicals there are more songs in the stage musical repetoire - including my favourite 'Mama says' which I think is a lovely, funny song (did you know you shouldn't a toaster whilst standing in the shower? And that you shouldn't hold your breath for more than an hour? Brilliant!) And to some it all up - no one can listen to the title song 'Footloose' and not feel like dancing!
