Before Rent...
This show proves just how talented Johnathan Larson really was. They music is mesmorising and although I have never seen the show I love this CD. The opening number 30/90 is a great rock musical opening and is probably my favourite song in it. I also love "Therapy", "Green Dress" and "Sunday". This musical is brilliant and really heartfelt.
An autobiographical musical everyone can enjoy and relate to
It is a shame Jonathan Larson died so young when He was producing work of this quality. Like His better known musical rent the songs on this Cd explore themes of love and friendship, living life and illness (AIDS), through to living conditions. Unlike Rent however the songs from Tick Tick boom are on one cd. Also unlike rent this musical only has three Singers. Jerry Dixon, Amy Spanger and Raul Esparza all do an excelent job with not a bad note to be heard. This is helped by the fact they all have the chance to perform solo, however the real strength to this cd is the harmonies they achieve. This is most notable on Johnny can't decide in my opinion and 30/90. The bonus song Boho Days is a real treat as the performer is Jonathan Larson. It is nice to hear the man perform from Tick Tick booms origional one man show.
The style of songs vary across a wide range. From funny duets like Therapy, to belt out loud ballads such as come to your senses this CD is one that has a song to appeal to everyone. The songs at times can also be witty social commentries such as sunday and leave strong messages such as the song Louder than Words. However as this CD contains just the songs if you are not familar with what goes on within the show it could be easy to get lost. I found it easy enough to follow having read synopsis of tick tick boom before listening . This however is not needed.
That is where the booklet steps in. Al Larson (Jonathans Dad) has his chance to explain what this is about and does so well. Like Julie Larson does on The rent blog for the forth coming movie he does a great job explaining the back story to Tick Tick boom and also honouring Jonathan In the process. He also manages to achieve this with humour! The Booklet also contains the lyrics and pictures, always a good thing!
If you like rent you will enjoy this and as an introduction to Jonathan Larsons work it is fabulous. It is well worth tracking down (It is at the time of writing still avaliable on Amazon.com ) in my opinion. If I was to rate this cd it would be 10/10.
its not rent but its close!
i really like this musical, its really different, its not rent, it hasnt got the same contrast of songs and storylines, but still has the same larson rawness. i did prefer rent but thats only because there are more songs that you can sing along to, however 'come to your senses' is a greater belter song!its worth having because its so different to other shows. the singers are amazing. if you prefer raw musicals to flowing oklahoma like ones, this one is a must!
