Feed me, Seymour!
I was a little doubtful on straying away from recording of Little Shop featuring the wonderful Ellen Greene, but boy, am I glad that I did! This CD is the first available to contain the entire score, including all the reprises! On top of that, there are 5 great bonus tracks, sung by Menkhen and Ashman (the composer and lyricist), which are a real treat! (and explain some of the more random lines in the final version of the show!)
The cast is superb, from Audrey right through to Audrey II! If you love Little Shop, and haven't heard this recording yet, buy it! It's well worth the money, and should even please other traditionalist Greene fans!
Little Album Of Stars
Little Shop of Horrors is probably the most famous off-broadway musical ever! Boasting famous songs, legendry performances and a man eating plant, it is easy to see why this show has worked its way into the musical history legends book! However this Broadway cast recording is the FIRST, the origional show never made the transition to Broadway!
Finally Audrey, Seymore and the rest of the gang bring skid row to Broadway and believe me... we are not dissapointed! The new cd has been updated for the contempory audience, with new sounds and a new way of performing! The sassy street trio who sing the title song are more soulful than before, and have power house voices that raise the roof! Each of the three performances is brilliant and steal each song!
Mr Mushnik is very good, i was never much for this character but he does a brilliant job!
The Dentist is as ever hilarious and a lot better singer than one may be used too! He sings well, and the expression put across is exactly what you see on the stage!
Seymore- Hunter Foster (famous for leading URINETOWN THE MUSICAL) had big boots to fill! He does it with ease! He is exceptionally funny as the misguided shop assistant, and sings finer than almost any other actor in todays field! Plus, we get to hear Audreys death and the scene between him and Kerry Butler is very touching!
Audrey- Kerry Butler will be a legend! She is amazing in this role! Her take on Audrey is different to that done by Ellen Greene in the origional production and in the film, but that makes it refreshing! No longer does Audrey talk her way through the songs, she sings like a soul queen and powers her way into your heart! Buy it if only to listen to her heartfelt rendition of Somewhere thats green!
Now... Audrey 2! A very good portrayel but sadly not as good as the films voice over! He does a grand job, but loses the emotion that you come to expect!
The added extra's that were cut from the script are all here and brillaint, the dentists song in particular is hilarious!
The album in general has lots of pictures which show you the set and costumes as well as the actual actors portraying these roles!
Believe me ,if you remotely liked Little Shop, you'll love it after hearing this album!
Little Shop of Horrors comes to Broadway for first time...
I've recently performed this show at my school, so was very interested to hear this new recording. I was quite pleased with it as there are a few changes which were cool. There's new, slightly funkier orchestration, and even some new vocal backing/vocal arrangements in many of the songs (most obvious in 'Suppertime', 'Skid Row' and 'Suddenly Seymour').
A few of the performances weaken at times but you have to see this recording for what it is as a new modern adaptation of the show. Kerri Butler delivers a very different Audrey which is kind of a mix between Christina Aguilera and a disney character. I personally thought it worked well though. Seymour is played pretty decently. Audrey 2 is also slightly different again to anything we've heard before, sounding at times a bit like Luther Vandross. Another highlight is the rendition of Mrs Luce in 'Meek Shall Inherit' which is hilarious!
There are also 5 bonus tracks, material by the songwriters which didn't make it into the show. I thought this was quite interesting to put in.
Generally I'd say buy this CD if you are familiar with the show. This new interpretation is great and the CD comes in a nice pop-up like package.
