Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Ted Neeley makes for a wimpy looking Jesus in Norman Jewison's screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice "rock opera," which was a smash on stage in the early '70s. Jewison (Other People's Money) adds some good exterior settings in the desert, but Lloyd Webber and Rice's dialogue-free story (everything is sung, as in a real opera), with its quasi-profundities about the inner demons of principal figures in the life of Christ, is the real hook. Yvonne Elliman sings the show's best-known song, "I Don't Know How to Love Him." --Tom Keogh

Synopsis
The last week of Christ's life seen through the eyes of Judas. Tracks include 'I Don't Know How To Love Him', 'Gethsemane', 'Superstar' and many more.

BRILLIANT!5
This is an outstanding musical or should I say rock opera. The interpretation and playing of Rice and Webbers songs is outstanding. Jewison and Braggs script is highly inventive and the whole film is a moving and rewarding experience.

Brilliant in all departments.

Fabulous!5
As a musical JCS is moving, powerfull and memorable.

As a film its great. Yes its off the wall and very much of its time, but that is part of its charm.

If you are a very serious person with no sense of humour like one reviewer here, then perhaps you wont like it. But if you have a funny bone and a love of musicals then I guarantee it will make you smile wide!

For me its brilliantly cast, tremendous fun and has all the fantastic music of JCS.

Brilliant original version of this groundbreaking musical5
I much prefer this version to the more recent production staged by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I remember the original production appearing in London all those years ago and the sensation it was. This DVD is a fine reminder. To me the recent, gritty and more realistic production lacked punch. Also I much prefer the singers in this old version, for Jesus, Judas, Herod and Pilate and I think the sarcasm of the original works far better than the "realistic" version.

But I heard ALW always wanted it in the style he recently produced but originally didn't have the control over the show - so it's good to have both versions so we can compare.
