From the Label
The Likes Of Us--the first musical ever written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Starring Stephen Fry. A must for all true Andrew Lloyd Webber fans.
Customer Reviews
100% Rice-LLoyd Webber
I was browsing in the cd stand of musicals at a store in Madrid and suddenly I found a musical signed by LLoyd Webber and Rice I had never heard about before. At first I thought it was something new just to find out after reading the cover that it was a piece of juvenilia, actually their very first collaboration short after meeting each other. This double CD is simply wonderful and it has a freshness provided by the fact that it was recorded live at the Sydmonton festival and by the priceless narrator of the story, the Wildean Stephen Fry,in an immense performance. After listening to it a couple of times, one easily arrives to the conclusion that the best musicals LLoyd Webber has ever written are beyond doubt those who composed with Tim Rice (JC Superstar, Evita, Joseph and this one). They would do themselves and those of us who love musical theatre a great favour if they decided to write together more musicals in the future.
Likes OF Us .. Fun Fun FUN
I thought the Likes Of Us was great fun, with Stephen Fry on top form as usual! I especially thought the number "LOVE IS HERE" was a lovely duet with 2 lovely voices, that i have not had the priviledge to hear before! I thought the humour of the piece was great and thought the fact Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were making fun of themselves made it all the better.
I think this would be a good one for the stage but only for a limited run... as i cant see it being another CATS! The music didnt give me goose pimples or touch any particular nerves, but i really enjoyed it and will look forward to listening to it again! And the main thing i liked about it as that it wasnt typically Andrew Lloyd Webber, it was very different from his later stuff! Although I am a big ALW fan! A
A Musical Gem
I heard this performance last night on Radio 2 and I was amazed by the quality of the songs in this Musical that was never released because it was apparently not good enough. The wit of narrator Stephen Fry perfectly complimented the fantastic cast of this performance and the beautiful music and lyrics of Messers Lloyd Webber and Rice respectfully. A particular favourite of mine was Going, Going, Gone.
A must buy for any musicals fanatic.
