Amazon.co.uk Review
It was surely only a matter of time until Tim Burton turned his dark attentions to the 19th century tale of Sweeney Todd, the cutthroat barber whose tales of murder and most grisly commerce on the streets of London became the stuff of an award winning 1979 musical. Here, a cast including longtime Burton collaborators Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter--plus Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall and Sasha Baron-Cohen–-breathe new life into Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s musical tale with a special gothic relish for the simmering horror within. Depp’s accomplished, haunted "No Place Like London" sets the scene for what’s to come, the nation’s capital introduced as a moral abyss ("There's a hole in the world like a great black pit/And the vermin of the world inhabit it"), while Bonham-Carter brings Cockney energy and a squirt of sauce to the "The Worst Pies in London". A neat comic turn, meanwhile, comes courtesy of Baron-Cohen, who plays the role of Italian barber Adolfo Pierelli–-inventor of a fraudulent anti-balding lotion–-with humorous gusto ("The Contest"). –-Louis Pattison

Sweeney Todd...great soundtrack!
I had never experienced Sweeney Todd before this film came along. As a fan of musicals, the actors Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter and the director Tim Burton, I was bound to enjoy the film. What I did not expect, was to enjoy it so much. I am sure I would never have gone to see the musical on stage, having not seen this film first. I now look forward to the experience with pleasure.
I enjoy soundtracks of musicals almost as much as the real thing, and this did not disappoint, a fact I shall be relishing in for the next few months for sure, as I get to know the tracks as well as other favourites such as The Phantom of the Opera and Wicked.
I would recommend this to virtually anyone.
Splendid, If Not The Best "Sweeney Todd" Recording
Without question the best recording of Sondheim's acclaimed musical, "Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street", has to be the original Broadway recording with Len Cariou and Angela Landsbury in the lead roles. However, this superb film soundtrack is a worthy addition, most notably for the brilliantly acted - and well sung - performance of Sweeney Todd by Johnny Depp (I also recommend it for the lush, well-played orchestral score by an orchestra of British musicians.). Depp's intensely vivid portrayal is truly mesmerizing, and his superb acting is effectively demonstrated too in his untrained, but emotionally intense, singing. Other excellent singers include both the surprising Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen. Even Helena Bonham Carter - whose voice isn't nearly as strong as Depp's - is quite convincing as Mrs. Lovett. If there is anything which diminishes the superb quality of this soundtrack for devout fans of this Sondheim musical, then it will be the absence of several songs, including the familiar "Ballad of Sweeney Todd". However, inspite of this, I believe that this excellent film adaptation of "Sweeney Todd" will be long remembered as the best one ever made from a Stephen Sondheim musical.
The only horror movie i like! Amazing film
I hate horror films, its all blood gore and violence for no reason. But after seeing johnny depp licking rocks in pirates of the Caribbean. i think that he isnt as scarey as he could have been. But he still has a slight chill factor. Depp is an amazing actor and singer, i loved this film and could get the music from it out of my head after watching the film. They are the most catchiest songs on earth! I bought this soundtrack the second after seeing the film in an advanced screening. I was really shocked that people had rated this 1 out of 5! they obviously were too busy looking in the mirror or thinking about what they would look like in short shorts! I love musicals and i have just seen mama mia and i am going out to buy the soundtrack to that too tomorrow! Believe me, i know a good musical when i see one and this is my top fave film of all time!
