Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes (Sixteen Candles), who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. --Tom Keogh

Synopsis
When five high school students from different social groups are forced to spend a Saturday together in detention, they find themselves interacting with and understanding each other for the first time. A jock (Emilio Estevez), a criminal (Judd Nelson), a princess (Molly Ringwald), a basket case (Ally Sheedy), and a brain (Anthony Michael Hall) talk about everything from parental tension to sex to peer pressure to hurtful stereotypes while serving time. Ultimately, the five find that they may have more in common than they ever imagined and learn more about themselves as well as each other. The only question is, Will they remember what they've learned after they leave detention

Customer Reviews

I would recommend this version!5
I bought this dvd just because it was cheaper than the one disc version, and I was pleasantly surprised!
The bonus disc has a 12-part documentary that I'd never seen before with cast members (Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, the care-taker)and film-makers discussing the film and its cultural resonance. They also discuss the Brat Pack label and it's impact on the actors' careers. There are different parts for each character and the music soundtrack.

Don't buy this Region 2 version2
I was so excited to see that my second favourite film of all time was finally getting a decent DVD treatment, yet there were no specs for the Region 2. All I could find was the Region 1 release which boasted of commentary with Judd Nelson and Anthony Michael Hall. Amazing right?
Sadly due to some nonsense or other the commentary tracks are not on the Region 2 release. But... the Region 1 is just a single disc. This one must be better, right?!
Nope. They've just put the same documentary features over onto another disc to make way for the umpteen language tracks on Disc 1 (which didn't leave any room for the original mono mix of the audio it seems, just 5.1 (not ideal for me without surround). Sigh.

Off to spend money on the US version...
Still, at least we finally have it.

The Classic Brat Pack Movie4
The Breakfast club, written and directed by the late John Hughes was one of the seminal teen films of the 1980's and the treatement given on this two disc special edition is what it deserves. The picture and sound quality of the film are excellent and the second disc contains a twelve part documentary featuring the cast members.

The film itself brings together all the classic social types from American High school, the princess, the jock, the geek, weird girl and outsider boy. They have to spend the day in the school library for detention and the entire focus of the film is their social interaction during that day.
