Synopsis
The bulldog is frequently considered the most British of dogs and is a breed of continuing popularity.
From the Inside Flap
The Bulldog - Britain's national breed - is one of the most distinctive-looking of all dogs, with a powerful, muscular body, a large head, and a unique, pugilistic expression. The Bulldog sums up British determination, and is associated worldwide with the legendary John Bull. However, the Bulldog's fierce appearance belies a most affectionate nature, and the breed is an ideal family companion. In this highly comprehensive Book of the Breed, the author traces the history of the Bulldog, which is one of Britain's oldest breeds, through to its present-day status as loyal family companion and popular show dog. The Breed Standard is analysed in detail, illustrated with line drawings by J Hay Hutchinson, the noted Bulldog authority. Puppy care and training, adult maintenance, breeding and rearing a litter, plus the Bulldog in the show ring, are all given detailed coverage, making this book a must for all Bulldog enthusiasts.
About the Author
Chris Thomas first became involved with the world of dogs as a junior handler and later competing in Obedience Trials. But it was when he attended the Bulldog Incorporated Centenary Show in 1975 that he first fell in love with the breed. He acquired his first Bulldog later that year, and in 1979 the Kingrock kennel bred its first Champions - Captain Christian and Maybe Baby. In 1981 Kingrock was the top-producing kennel for the breed, and since then it has earned a reputation for consistently producing top-quality stock. There are now some thirty Kingrock Champions in the UK and overseas, and a number of Kingrock stud dogs have formed the foundation for today's leading British kennels. Chris is an International Championship Show judge, and has travelled throughout Europe on judging appointments. In 1992 he judged the first-ever show of the Dutch Bulldog Club, which drew an entry of over one hundred Bulldogs, and in 1996 he has been invited to judge the Championship Show of Bulldog Club Inc. - Britain's most senior Bulldog club. Chris is also well-known in the canine press, writing the breed notes for the weekly paper, Dog World.
