Would it surprise you to hear that one in four people are affected by cancer? If you knew that simple lifestyle changes could significantly reduce your chances of developing the disease, would you take advantage of your natural defences? 'I had cancer. I was diagnosed for the first time 15 years ago. I received conventional treatment and the cancer went into remission, but I relapsed after that. Then I decided to learn everything I could to help my body defend itself against the illness. I've lived cancer free now for seven years. In this book, I'd like to tell you the stories - scientific and personal - behind what I learned.' Author David-Servan Schreiber is an academic physician with a wealth of experience in the field of integrative medicine. He will show you how, through simple alterations in diet, lifestyle and attitude, you can tackle cancer alongside conventional treatments, or even avoid it altogether. This is not a biology textbook, but a practical, insightful and individual guide that will allow you to make the best choices for your own health and well-being. A sensible, logical no-nonsense approach to living with cancer
There are many books and websites out there that claim to 'cure' cancer, that the medical profession is involved in a giant conspiracy theory to keep the drugs companies in business.
David Servan-Schrieber takes a thorough, no-nonsense approach to cancer and how it develops. As both a doctor and a cancer survivor, he looks at case studies along with his own and outlines a number of mechanisms which, whilst not proven through clinical trials, have had enough positives effects on a substantial number of sufferers to have a significance. A combination of diet (not proscriptive), good mental attitudes and exercise - have in very many cases enabled patients with advanced stages of cancer to live beyond doctors' expectations with a good quality of life. Much is common sense, but it is easy to read and offers a number of easy alterations to your life, which may help prevent the onset of cancer, or further development of existing disease. Highly recommended.
An essential read
I work in Nutrition and support people with Cancer and this is probably just one of a handful of books I recommend to patients and their families. Well written, excellent scientific support and good personal input from the Author. Too many health / Cancer books put the fear of God into patients and create additional stress and anxiety; whilst this one provides good, honest information and support. The pull out mini booklet is a useful bonus.
An encouraging read
I help out in a cancer drop-in centre and this book is often picked up and taken home by those who have cancer, and those caring for them. The author is a doctor himself, who has cancer. He has looked beyond the orthodox establishment to what has helped him, as well as looked at the research. In the back cover there is a little booklet which lists helpful foods, so you can see at a glance, some of the information from the book.
