Vintage early Brueggemann
This is a fine series of lectures/sermons on the three major prophetic texts of the Hebrew Bible - Jeremiah from immediately before the Babylonian exile, Ezekiel from the exile itself, and Deutero-Isaiah from the postexilic period. For each prophet, an overview chapter on general approach and themes is followed by exposition of a representative key passage. The overview chapters are masterful in their grasp of the prophet's theological outlook, social setting, and literary techniques. Brueggemann is particularly good on Ezekiel's subversive use of tradition, but I also gained a real appreciation of the way Ezek. 1 - 32 and 33 - 48 mirror and recapitulate each other for powerful dramatic effect. The expositions are a little more uneven, but this is still vintage early Brueggemann, with more than the occasional nod towards the way in which aspects of contemporary American society might justifiably find themselves in these prophets' cross-hairs, if they were to preach to a contemporary audience.
