The UK's finest musical export to the US step up a gear5
After two initial releases Mystery #1 and Wireless days in 2000 and 2002 The Contrast suddenly hit top gear with 'Fade Back In' in 2004. From the moment I heard them I became a fan, Dave Reid has a rare talent in that he is both a great songwriter and multi skilled guitarist and also has a voice you can't mistake. The stabbing guitars of George Zipp remind me of Andy Partridge (XTC) but then 'Give Me One More Chance' has its roots in The Byrds - every way Dave Reid glances backwards to the greats but adding a new angle. The latest CD 'Forget to tell the Time' is masterpiece but this CD is a close second and a must have.

Three minute wonders4
Pound together the musical interplay of Television, the three-part harmonies of your favourite West Coast jangle poppers, add the mischievous vibrancy of The Who, toss it around and you've got this diamond of a band from England, The Contrast.
This collection, their third, is their strongest yet. They wear their influences on their sleeves without shame whilst naturally developing their own distinctive voice. Opening track 'Give me one more chance' features a 12-string lick loaned from the McGuinn library whilst 'Disconnected' nods to a Life's Rich Pageant era-REM. 'George Zipp' is a quirky, stop-start number - what the band do best - whilst 'Something tells me', my favourite track, is a slower, haunting echo left over from the band's notable but less instantaneous second album, Wireless Days.
Formulaic? Maybe. But all in all, a dozen instant guitar pop gems that burrow into your head and latch on like barnacles. Blasted things.

the best yet5
this is the best album yet from the peterborough foursome. although the lyrics are somewhat dark at times, the tunes are consistently catchy, and you WILL find yourself humming one or another in the shower...
