I have the power, durr deee drurrr diit diit....
bought an external hard drive ( passport) which didnt need AC adapter to power! ( one of the main factors for buying)

It was reccomended that i bought one of these to make sure I had a reliable influx of power.

Longer cables reduce the power to the drive y'see.

this one has double connectors and is short ( ideal )

Western Digital compatible 'special' cable
I bought a Western Digital 320GB External Hard-drive, but unfortunately it was not compatible with my laptop as the connection was for USB 2.0 and my laptop only had a 1.0/1.1 port. The box for the drive said a 'special cable' was available for computers that limit USB power. This cable was impossible to get from WD as it is only sold on their US website...which doesn't ship internationally.

This is the perfect cable if you have a similiar problem.
