Keep away if you scare easily!
I have read this play and been to see it twice, both times with great success. The clever adaptation from Susan Hill's novel is lively, creative and highly disturbing. The suspense created in the script and action led to the life being scared out of me and to me being very enlightened with a brilliant traditional ghost story.
Very Scary Play
Although I haven't read the play, I did see it in London the spring of 1992, and I must say it is the single scariest play/movie I have seen. Even now over a decade later, thoughts about it still send shivers up my spine. I highly recommend this to anyone who claims to be a horror buff.
the scariest thing i've ever seen!
The Woman in Black was first bought to our stage in 1989 by Susan Hill; an adaptation of the Stephen Mallatratt novel about a recluse woman who passes away and when the lawyer goes to her house to sort out her legal gargon, she makes a re-appearance.
This play I saw in the spring of 2005, and the quality has not dropped since I saw it in 1996. I'm now 16 and used the play as part of the GCSE written examination. When I first saw it, I was 6 or 7, and I can safely say my parents regretted taking me for about 5 years. I didn't sleep properly for a year I was so scared.
This is a different kind of tension to the film genre. When you're in the Theatre, you cant turn off the screen you're watching it on, or go out of the room, all you can do is shut your eyes, but the soundtrack scares you even whilst doing that.
I cannot recommend this enough.
(Also to any GCSE students using this is as the stimulus for their course, please buy this and use it in your "Response to a Live Play" question if your school use "The Woman in Black". The book is very informative and useful, with the script, entire lighting and cue list. It helped me and I managed to get an A*, so i cannot recommend it enough! Good Luck Guys!)
If you think you're tough, go and see the woman in black, it's terror you haven't experienced yet. Oh, and watch out for that rocking chair...
