Episcopal Enigma
Whilst a gregarious character Richard Harries is a bit of a loner. This apparent paradox is revealed in a life where a very real sense of destiny compelled him to chart his own clerical course. Obviously a humble man he went with the flow of a life that made the best use of his gifts spiritual and personal and propelled him to the ecclesiastical heights. The book is detailed with much description of a frenetic paper filled life. There are facts in abundance but perhaps more time could have been spent on the anecdotal which could have revealed more about a man who adorned the bishop's bench revealing both its strengths and weaknesses.

a biography for the wider situation
Richard Harries was Bishop of Oxford, and it was he who tried to appoint Jeffrey John (celibate gay man) as a bishop in the diocese (you may remember the controversy) - inevitably this part takes a chunk of the biography, but what comes across is not a dogmatic bishop from the liberal wing of the church, but a thoughtful human being, and anyone interested in the story of the church of england would do well to read this
