Amazing game, P2P online knocks it down a star
This is the cricket game real cricket fans have been waiting for. 34 shots, extremely fun bowling, tactical fielding and opposition AI that punishes you as a real cricket team would.
This is a game made by Pakistani cricket enthusiasts which is why it is a sim and not arcade, it has been done properly. No longer can you hit 4's and 6's from the off. My first tries were 14, 24 and 12 from 10 overs, for a few wickets too. After many many hours i can get 85-105 in 10 overs but the cpu can do that as well and i only win about 40% of my games...... and this is on easy. In fact the game is so tough to begin with that people have been put off shortly after playing but if you want a real life cricket game then you will respect that and if you have a cricket brain then you should get better relatively quickly.
This is the best batting experience i have played and yet bowling is my favourite part of the game. The cursor control is awkward but if you map it onto an control pad analogue stick (not supported but Xpadder does the trick) then it is fine. There are genuine edges, i have only had the game a week and gave taken some of the best wickets i have ever taken in a cricket game. This game rewards your bowling as you would expect it to.
The way the game works is that every team is of equal skill, each team has 160 points to be divided between the batting, bowling and fielding. Each player can have up to 20 points overall and 10 points in one category. The higher the points the more efficient in that attribute they are. If a batsmen has 7+ they can assign a batmen type out of defensive (small hitter but can aim for more of the field), aggressive (big hitter but can aim for less of the field) and balanced (default for those under 7 and as it suggests).
Bowlers get one special delivery if over 7 and 2 if they are a 10 (you can choose which delivery) and fielders over 7 can specialise in running or catching.
The game has a league, cup and exhibition offline and the AI is tough and exciting to play, i don't know how they got the AI like they did but it is class. Online is a series of 1 on 1 games with a multitude of stats and leaderboards plus clubs will be patched into the game which will create mini communities.
The biggest problem with the game comes with the online. Mindstorm are only a small company and cannot afford dedicated servers. It is P2P and as the cricketing nations are so far apart it makes for terrible lag. I was playing an aussie last night and there was a lag of 1 1/2 seconds for me (none for the host). He was a much better player but my 14 all out against his 105/6 in a 10 over match was much due to lag, basically unplayable. However if you play against someone in the UK or mainland Europe then there will be no lag and against the US players the lag is managable. However play against anyone from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka or Oceana and it is terrible.
Other cons, many which are down to budget but will be added in later so don't be put off by the jaw dropping ones
* No tests (This will be added in later and the game is perfect for it)
* No replays (damn shame but will be added in)
* Graphics (very average but the gameplay is what it is about)
* AI can move into position before you run up (judged on cursor but this should be fixed and isn't as big as it sounds)
* Player appearance creator is terrible
* No commentary (but commentary gets repetitive)
Lets recap the pro's
* Quality quality gameplay (including brilliant batting, rewarding bowling and tactical fielding)
* Balanced gameplay
* Quality AI
* Animations are excellent
* Crowd sounds are brilliant and make up for no commentary
* Hawkeye and the out/not out board in the stands
* Lots of achievements and goals to unlock
Basically if you want a real cricket sim that rewards real cricket play then this is a snatch at twice the price. It is a work in progress in terms of an overall package but if you can appreciate the low budget and focus on the outstanding gameplay then you will love it. I have spent dozens of hours on it since i have bought it and still am not close to being a great player. In fact i have not even won a trophy on easy.
