The best just got better...
Without a doubt Melt-Banana are a true pioneering force in the world of hardcore music. Sounding like practically no one else in the rock world and showing genuine musical genius at every turn, this band are nothing short of mind blowing.
After the success of 'Teeny Shiny' (their last masterpiece) it would have been hard to guess which direction the band would move next. If anything they've got more accessible still on this album. Some purists may argue that the band have lost their edge, but these people could not be more wrong. All the things that made the previous albums brilliant - ballistic rhythm section, seemingly chaotic time-signatures, frantic vocals, the most mind-blowing guitar acrobatics EVER committed to Compact Disc - are present and correct on this new outing. It is just that this time the tracks are longer, more considered and generally better structured than before. This is also the most varied MxBx album so far, with the usual hardcore blasts interspersed with quiet build ups, strangely danceable interludes and (SHOCK) singing!!! Yes, the mighty Yasuko actually sings - in a lovely sweet poppy voice - on the brilliant penultimate track.
Special mention must also be given to Agata, the band's guitarist. As I previously mentioned, NO ONE has ever played guitar like this before. When not flinging out manic riffs, he is wrenching the most amazing noises from his instrument. It is worth noting that a large proportion of the mad electronic noises on this album actually come from Agata's axe - for an example of pure genius, listen to the guitar work that sounds like a synth/sampler on the second track. Beautiful!!!
If you have ever considered checking out this band, or if you like your music to be genuinely innovative and unique then I advise you to get this album immediately. If you liked their previous albums, then what the heck are you waiting for?! Shell out the cash and GET THIS CD NOW!!!!! You will not regret it.
Truly one of the best albums this year, and definitely the bravest and most creative.
Great!
"...sounds like drugged up squirrels attacking a drum kit." Hmmm.... "Add to basket." So contrary.
It's great, it really is - it DOES sound remarkably like furry tree-dwelling rodents savaging musical equipment, and this is something I like - I love her voice, which is kinda cute bubbly-gum squeeking over multi-layered guitar-driven thrashings... The first few tracks are the most immediate, and the rest grow on you with a few listens. If you feel the need to snobbishly withdraw into ever smaller musical categories, or want to experiment with fun, dynamic and socially unnaceptable noise, then listen to MxBx... at the very least it'll give you something to discuss with the guy with the nose-ring behind the counter at your local record store.
Machine Gun Pop
Grr! I bought this after hearing bits on John Peel's show, who quite understandably has been lauding them. It is a short (about 30 mins) life-enhancing slice of screaming thriller pop. Play loud, as they say. Only now are they making any impact in Japan, on the back of their success here. They sing in English, but choose the words on how they sound to a Japanese speaker, so don't expect any sense. Relentless guitars. High voices burst over the top. Imagine PJ Harvey played at triple speed over frenzied guitar and you get an idea. Magnificent stuff.
