Synopsis
Based on a true story of heroism and sacrifice, SAINTS AND SOLDIERS was an acclaimed hit on the film festival circuit, winning over 10 best film awards around the country. In some of the most vicious days of World War II, four American soldiers survive a massacre of prisoners and remain trapped behind enemy lines. When they encounter a hiding British officer with valuable intelligence information, the group decides to try and sneak back into friendly territory with the data. However, that proposition is rife with difficulties: the group is mostly unarmed, the weather is freezing cold, they have no food, and the woodlands are crawling with German soldiers. Can each of the men overcome their fear and the odds to deliver the information that may save hundreds of Allied lives? SAINTS AND SOLDIERS is an independently made war film which proves that verisimilitude and emotional impact in the genre is not entirely the province of Hollywood.

Excellent War Movie On a Shoestring
Four American soldiers- Gunderson,Kendrick,Gould and Deacon- escape a massacre by German Troops at Malmedy. They meet up with a downed British Pilot who has vital intelligence and together they try to cross through eneny lines to deliver it.
Playing like a superior episode of Band Of Brothers(and shot in the self same desaturated palate)Saints and Soldiers benefits from a tight running time(85 minutes)which does nothing to diminish it's emotional power and a good ensemble cast. The action when it comes is both potent and deeply troubling(as it should be)with Ryan Little's direction allowing all the characters to develop convincingly.
One or two contrivances and the pilot's odd British accent aside,Saints and Soldiers is a worthy entry into the war genre and what it lacks in spectacle,it more than makes up for in it's potent depiction of the human cost of war.
Spend a little extra for this two disc set and you get a worthy doc on the events at Malmedy. For anyone who holds B OF B in high regard this is an essential companion piece.
Slow Paced - But Worth Watching
Scenario - After the Malmedy Massacre,4 American Soldiers escape, but they are not Armed and have little in the Way of Supplies, the Film follows Their Trials and Tribulations as they attempt to reach Friendly Forces.I wont go into detail on the rest of the Film, which is made in a very professional Manner, and is Historically Accurate. The Uniforms and Equipment are very Authentic on Both sides. The Film is not going to be a Great Classic but is NOT Bad either hence 3 Stars. The 2 Disc Version contains a Documentary on the Malmedy Massacre and its Aftermath.
