Books I really recommend
The Hour of the Star (Black & White S.)The Hour of the Star (Black & White S.) by Clarice Lispector
Buy new: £5.35 / Used from: £2.99
A study in worthlessness; a perfect work of art . Then look for SUMMER RAIN by MARGUERITE DURAS - not on Amazon - a manifesto of autonomy and ecstasy.

Matter and transcendence; this book is exquisite, totally flawless to me.
A Simple Heart (New Directions Bibelot)A Simple Heart (New Directions Bibelot) by G Flaubert
Buy new: £7.99 / Used from: £1.82
The catholicism of us all captured in one beautiful story. I like The Temptation of St Anthony too, but A Simple Heart is so sweet and lyrical for me it expresses all of F's themes very gracefully.
Destruction of the Father: Writings and Interviews, 1923-1997Destruction of the Father: Writings and Interviews, 1923-1997 by Louise Bourgeois

Its astonishing how profound Louise Bourgeois's thinking is; I think her writing even outdoes a lot of her other work.

Girlfriend in a ComaGirlfriend in a Coma by Douglas Coupland

This book is more important than it seems, I suspect. I don't know what it was about this book but it got under my skin, and he has a true moral purpose which I respect.

L'Assommoir (Oxford World's Classics)L'Assommoir (Oxford World's Classics) by Émile Zola

Just this of Zola's. The sexuality of society; an incredible book. The buildings sweat and a pulse throbs through the slums in a way that eclipses Dickens .
Sophie Calle: Double GameSophie Calle: Double Game by Sophie Calle

I didn't like Lawrence until I read The Rainbow - get a better translation than Wordworth's
BelovedBeloved by Toni Morrison

this is above and beyond where a book can normally go, so what do I say about it?
For Your Own Good: Roots of Violence in Child-rearingFor Your Own Good: Roots of Violence in Child-rearing by Alice Miller
