Surprisingly engaging read
I sat and read the entire 310 pages over a single weekend, a good indicator that the writing style was interesting and engaging.
I found myself disagreeing with some of the content, but overall this was a thought-provoking and interesting read. Several aspects of the 'art' were discussed in ways I had not considered. Having read it, I think I will now keep dipping in and out of it, using it for reflective reference.
I wouldn't recommend this to a complete novice, but with a bit of time served it is a valuable insight into officiating the game, and highly recommended.
A Great Book! Even If You're Not A Refere!
Going Native in Catalonia [Catalunya]
Although I played and coached when I was a lot younger than I am now, I remain something of an obsessive soccer fan and am pretty sure I've got The Rules of the Game embedded in my soul by now.
As someone with a profound knowledge of the game I can only say that I enjoyed this book immensely - I picked it up, started reading and just couldn't put it down for the next couple of days.
Some of the information contained in the book was quite complex but as the text was peppered with interesting anecdotes and fun stories, I didn't find it too difficult to make sense of the more technical aspects.
I tend to agree with the last reviewer that The Art of Refereeing could well be tough going for a novice referee. However, if you're serious about getting involved in the officiating side of the game, this book will be a valuable companion for years to come - I bet you'll still be referring to it when you're reffing First Division games.
Highly Recommended!
Excellent referee guide!
I am really amazed with this book. I am a referee in Denmark, and I must say that after reading most of the chapters (I am finishing the book now), I feel that my level of refereeing increased, I am getting positive feedback from players. The advices given by the authors are well explained and reference to the specific, practical situations which can occur on the football (soccer) pitch. I recommend it to all referees.
