a must for those for whom any Goon show is worth hearing!4
Brand new for August 2010, this is the 27th volume in the Goon Show releases by the BBC, for some reason under the title of "Check the Yukkabakaka Gauges", cashing in on nostalgia while those who remember them are still around. None the worse for that!

There is little point in reviewing the Goons themselves, you'll either be familiar with them or not. Modern audiences might wonder why their humour is so often described as `groundbreaking' yet, for those who look back on them fondly like myself, you just can't get enough! This compilation as usual contains four episodes:

- The Greatest Mountain In The World
- The Kippered Herring Gang
- The First Albert Memorial to the Moon
- Robin's Post (Story of Lord Seagoon)

all in the by then well-established format, with the familiar characters present and correct, absolutely lunatic plots, wonderfully imaginative sound effects and weak endings in some cases. I suspect few will regard these four episodes as the finest examples, and few will put them amongst their absolute favourites, but they are by no means the worst to come from the pen of Milligan and Sykes. So as not to deceive prospective purchasers (who, after all, are shelling out hard earned money), I've given it four stars but simply in comparison with the brilliance of other episodes; I stress they are still well worth hearing.

Perhaps the greatest bonus is Robin's Post, a rarely heard episode - one yet to be broadcast on Radio 7 (probably for copyright reasons, the complexity of which always eludes me). Again, not the best, but moments of inspired lunacy!

As I say, a must for all fans - to me, any Goon show is worth hearing! Shop around for the best price (try the BBC website for starters).
