Elegant new addition to Orwell studies5
This book fills an important gap in Orwell-studies, synthesising and excerpting 20th century criticism, film versions of Orwell's works (and responses to these films) and even encompassing such 21st century phenomena as Channel 4's 'Big Brother'. Dr. Lea writes clearly and stylishly, and he manages to create a narrative of Orwell-reception that tells a story almost as fascinating as Orwell's own works. The chapters are thematically arranged, examining genre, political and ideological responses, genre and Orwell's infiltration of contempoprary language. I was particularly impressed by the way in which Dr. Lea has managed to edit a volume that could appeal to many different audiences, from advanced school level, through to undergraduate students; even for non-English Lit. academics with a more general interest in Orwell and cultural studies he presents a persuasive and comprehensive guide to the reciprocal relationship between Orwell and the changes taking place in 20th and 21st century popular and literary culture. This is a valuable addition to this very useful series, and well worth the money!
