The Theory and Practice of Training, now in its 6th edition, provides a wide-ranging outline of the major instructional and training concepts, and their relationship to training in practice. The authors have expanded on information relating to the training environment, equipment, and strategies, as well as new material on cognitive task analysis (CTA). With real-life case studies to illustrate the theory, this engaging and practical book is as valuable to those who want to put their training experience into a coherent context, as it is to managers who need to understand the role that training can play.

Review
“this is the revised fifth edition of a well established book and one that remains a solid, worthwhile investment. every chapter is trustworthy and lucid and has reliable advice on the brass tacks such as understanding the work of kirkpatrick and auditing training. i was particularly impressed by the range and level of references, which would give any novice a good overview of the history of corporative training and all the big names. a must have for the corporative bookshelf”.

All the answers you ever needed?
This is one of those books that should rightly adorn the desk of every training and development professional. Concentrating on the systematic approach it covers all phases of the training/learning cycle and includes suitable practical examples and guidance wherever necessary. It is also an easy read with diagrams to help explain concepts and tables to add meaning. It is an invaluable reference manual and could easily from the basis for a comprehensive train the trainer course!
It is worth pointing out that this is not just a book aimed at 'trainers', but training managers, line managers, training sponsors and anyone in the field of training and development would gain from reading this book. Not only does it cover the systematic approach, but also it goes on to look at the 'professional' roles of trainers and how such roles may be evolving.
It's weakness is that it a little limited in the scope of examples given, its' adherence to the systematic approach, (no bad thing) and it could perhaps include more of the underpinning theory. This however is more than overcome by the use of excellent referencing allowing the reader to do their own further research.
Overall thoroughly recommended!
