It can sometimes seem that there are simply too many distinct problem areas to master in Japanese - the kana, the kanji, the particles, the verb tenses, polite Japanese versus actual Japanese, etc etc. Fortunately there are a number of excellent books to help hit each of these sticking points right where it hurts most.

In particular, I have to give a special shout out to the Naoko Chino / Power Japanese books, which I've always found very helpful, if a little staid. If you're a geek like me, though, and appreciate things being laid out in an otaku-friendly manner (i.e. exhaustively comprehensive tables) then these are your boys.
