Customer Reviews
Its just excellent
I have enjoyed the dark tower books more than I thought I would.
It has been pretty much non-stop all the way through (except for book 6, I found that dull).
The way in which the surrounding lands are described is amazing, you can see how beautiful mid-world is and feel the sun shining down on you as Roland and his Ka-tet struggle to stay alive.
The characters are very well written and because you've been reading about them for 7 books you really care about them (well I did anyway).
So this is the 7th and last book in this brilliant Dark Tower series. Expect to be upset by some of the events, it can hit you hard. Something I didn't expect happened and then almost straight after something else just as bad happened. It's a big book but not once did I find it boring, there is always something happening.
I know that a lot of people cant stand the way it ended, and I can see why, but I actually thought it was an excellent ending. I sure didn't see it coming. I think people want a lovely, warm, alls well ending, well I find those boring beyond belief and I'm happy with the way it ended. A little cruel, yes, but brill.
The only thing I didn't like about this book was the way in which one of the deaths was dealt out, it was so bloody violent it put me in a bad mood for a while. But a good story doesn't always do what the reader wants.
5 star entertainment. I'm so sad its ended now.
King finishing in style
I'm starting by reviewing the final book in the Gunslinger series as this is (obviously) the most recent one in the series that I've read.
If you do not like King, read this series, it will change your mind about him ! If you do like him, you'd be mad not to have started already. For each of these camps, there will be a different reward.
King-haters will finally realise what a damned fine writer he can be, and I would be surprised if they weren't thoroughly hooked after the first book. This series is fantasy at its very finest, and the final book brings everything together superbly and with no element at all of rushing/fudging the conclusion which often happens in such cases (I would hope not after this number of volumes !).
King-lovers will revel in the usual fantastic array of characters/creations, locations and particularly in the in-jokes and references to his other books, tying everything King together into a cohesive universe. (Don't worry if you've never read any other King books, this will not spoil your enjoyment one bit).
However, you need to be aware that this isn't his usual immediate gratification horror fare. To describe this as Horror would be to do this book (and indeed series) an injustice as it is multi-aspect, effectively combining fantasy, horror, western, romance, adventure and thriller. But don't let any of that put you off as this series is truly genre defying, and (cliche alert) really does have something for everyone. Horrific and bloody it can be at times (this is King remember)but the pace is more steady than his other novels, and the serial approach allows a great depth of storyline to develop and a constant building of tension well beyond what would normally be bearable. Roland is not your usual hero, but by the time you get to the end you can imagine no better sculpted nor well deserving hero. His trials and the way he deals with them are nothing less than inspiring.
I am now so depressed....
1> The series is finished
2> How can I ever hope to become a writer with such stupendous talent out there
3> Will King ever be able to equal this
A perfect end to a truly great series. So good that I fully intend to go back and re-read at some stage in the future, to fully appreciate all the elements I may have missed first time (and I rarely re-read books !).
Superb no matter your reservations about KING
Mr Kings books have haunted countless generations and many of that "Generation King" have almost been force fed his literature, wehther on celluloid or paper. I for one have bravely resisted this until these books came along (With the exception of Salems lot - a superb Vampire tale)
Intrigued by the fact these books were not his normal genre, i read the first book and thought; Yawnathon. Ever giving writers second chances I re-read the first book and read the second and have been hooked on this series ever since.
King manages to excercise so many twists, turns and loops and draws you further and further in until the rush to the superb ending. This series breaks out of any classification so theres no point in pigeon holing this series, just read and enjoy. Superlative characters whom you feel every twist and turn with, a great hero and some superb action set pieces means you will be gripped by this, no matter your feelings on this author.
Great and highly reccomended. Up there in my eyes with Dune, Hyperion Cantos and Lord of the Rings...buy it.
