the forgotten disc
like most people i picked this up on vinyl after purchasing the wheels' and strong arm' albums, like most i was surprised by the opening tracks rainbow theme/frozen rainbow - ' rush' like prog and excellent they were, this remaster suffers the least from the tinny sound, to my ears anyway, and is a reminder that saxon were a class act from the start,stallion'/judgement day and backs to the wall are still fantastic rockers, militia guard still bounces out the speakers and all sound improved on the remaster.
The bonus tracks are a revelation, probably the best of the 3 releases, the 1978 demos are excellent and i much prefer the demo of big teaser to the original released version, listen to the 'QUO' riff,.
Next up is the radio one session and already you can hear the step up in class and performance,i can bin the old cassette recording now,the disc is rounded off with the remaining Donington '80 tracks the best of which are on the wheels' remaster,so another winner , judging by the cd spines this is the first in a series of reissues, here to the next batch
Saxon the true pioneers of heavy metal, with their debut album, this was only the beginning.
The 1st album of Saxon is a fresh example of early NWOBHM, released by the French label Carrere in 1979; and though its production isn't great, still it is one of the most enjoyable and distinctive records of this band.
`Rainbow Theme/Frozen Rainbow', 'Stallions of the Highway and `Big Teaser' are my personal favourites of this very short album (less than 30 min): a rough and primitive Saxon, with some punkish touch and serious Status Quo boogie influence. Simple, straight ahead rock and roll. Saxon was always at their best live.
