Nostalgia driven DVD
Whether you like this DVD or not will depend on whether you enjoy retro games or not. Personally, I can't understand how retro games are even popular as they don't even compare to current generation games. Still, there is a market for retro games out there, and therefore, obviously, some market for this DVD.
(However, don't expect a high quality DVD transfer. A disclaimer on the back of the box says that this DVD was recorded from a copy of the programme, not the masters tape - meaning that it has a very grainy texture, and some dodgy sound in places. But honestly, it didn't interfere with the viewing.)
The first thing that will strike you about this DVD is that it was actually made 20 odd years ago. I thought this was going to be a documentary looking back on some classic games, but it was actually a video made at the time. You can tell, when the narrator talks about the original Nintendo Entertaiment System as being the latest games console!
Also, don't expect much info on the consoles. Despite a couple of minutes spent on each console (including Sega, Nintendo and Atari's) introducing it, and a short explanation on how to connect your console to a TV, all the DVD consists of is hundreds of clips from retro games - over 400 of them, the back of the box boasts!
But even that's misleading. Although its great to see the old games, and brings back a few memories, a lot of the games clips are shown more than once. For example, donkey kong clips were shown on the Nintendo and Atari console sections.
Not a lot of time is spent with each game, more footage of each game rather than quantity would have been better, but retro gamers will surely love it all.
But when the clips play there is no voiceover narration or explanation, so for the majority of the DVDs 2hour running time all you get is a cacophony of beeps, explosions and bangs - sort of headache inducing after an hour!
There is a lot on this disk - including an advert for a console that was never released - so it does feel like you are getting your money's worth. Again, how you feel about getting this DVD will be on how much of an interest you have in retro games.
