Lela Nargi News: Start simple and sweet in the knitted food department, with a new book called Knitted Cakes by Susan Penny. There are, as the subtitle promises, 20 sweets to make. And, relievingly, there are also 20 accompanying well-written sets of instructions, which appear right alongside the photo of the sweet in question rather than at the end of the book. The latter circumstance I always find slightly uninspiring - prefer to have the finished item in plain site as I am grappling with knitting it. Most alluring of the sweets in the slender volume: a slice of double-layer chocolate cake with a fuzzy cream filling. A little square of pink birthday cake topped with a knitted candle. A fruit tart festooned with cherries and grapes and strawberries. Lemon meringue pie. A poof of a Viennese Whirl. And a Raspberry Heart Cake (note to self: a small, easy project to keep in mind for Valentine's Day). Those of you with sweets-loving children are advised to keep this book under wraps unless you are prepared to knit up the contents of an entire bakery shelf. Machine Knitting Monthly: Susan Penny brings up 20 hand-knitted cakes to make and keep and 20 more to make and give away! You'll have great fun knitting this mouth-watering selection of muffins, fairy cakes, carrot cake and scrumptious gateaux. Using simple, easy-to-follow instructions, no-one will be able to resist knitting at least one of the cakes in this book, if not the entire collection. It's a wonderful project for anyone interested in contemporary knitting design. If you don't feel like picking up a pair of knitting pins, many of the ideas can be transferred to a machine. Cakes & Sugarcraft: If you have some knitting skills and fancy making a low-calorie cake, then you may like to try your hand at one of these contemporary textile creations. A hand-knitted cake would make a fun present for a cake making - or simply a cake loving! - friend. The 20 designs look almost good enough to eat, from fairy cakes and iced doughnuts to a slice of chocolate gateau and a brilliant fruit tart. "It's a dream come true - delicious looking bakes without the calories! The truly scrumptious designs in Twenty Make Knitted Cakes by Susan penny really do look good enough to eat. Whether you prefer a chocolate gateau, Swiss roll or a fruit tart, you'll be sure to find at least one that's totally irresisitble." Crafts Beautiful An incredible novel 'cake' book but the cakes are not to be eaten, though they would make wonderful knitted keepsakes for the happy couple and their guests. With humorous iced doughnuts, crazy cupcakes, carrot cake (complete with a mini carrot), swiss rolls to an individual birthday cake and a gorgeous slice of sparkly wedding cake. There are plenty of small designs here to use up those leftover bits of wool and give someone a lovely surprise.-Cake Craft & Decoration

yum yum!
This book is good but not for a beginner. Some of the cakes require using double pointed needles. I have not yet finished knitting any of the cakes but am in the middle of my first one, chocolate of course! The pattern is easy to follow and I have not spotted any mistakes, yet. I don't know what uses people could make for the cakes but my young daughter can't wait to have a tea party with hers!!
Pointless, but fun!
I love this book, but as yet haven't started to make any of the cakes. They all seem so fantastic, but completely pointless - what would you do with a knitted cake?!! I will make them at some point, and give them as gifts - I just hope the person receiving them realises what effort has gone into it!!!
why?
Why? was my husband's comment as to what I was knitting! I think this book is superb and I have knitted several of the cakes and displayed them on a cake stand! Instructions are clear and you can adapt patterns to the scraps of wool you have. Very good value.
