The Second Edition of Critical Psychology extends the original's comprehensive and accessible critique of mainstream psychology. Fully revised, reconfigured and expanded, the Second Edition explores critical psychology's continued growth and diversification, offering practical advice, and noting significant theoretical and political dilemmas confronting critical psychologists today.
While other texts focus on narrower specialties within critical psychology or on specific theoretical or methodological perspectives, Critical Psychology: An Introduction retains its focus on critical psychology as a whole.
Key features of the new edition:
- Each chapter now also includes a summary of main points, a glossary of important terms, suggested readings and Internet sites, and questions for discussion.
- The book's contributors - most of them new - have thoroughly updated the original chapters and provide multiple perspectives on critical psychology's core concerns.
- Reflecting recent developments, Parts 3 and 4 are completely new to this edition. Part 3 provides in-depth coverage of critical psychology's relevance to social justice, focusing on the issues of race, class, gender, disability, colonization/globalization, human rights/social justice in post-conflict settings, and oppression/empowerment in mental health systems. Part 4 examines critical psychology practice, from theory, methodology, and therapy to community organizing and the politics of resistance.

Critical Psychology: An Introduction
Fox and Prilleltensky have put together a fantastic collection of readings which focus on the way in which critical psychology can offer a competitive alternative to mainstream approaches. Their own introduction to the book outlines the approach of critical psychology and the further contributions higlight a range of issues for which a critical stance can be usefull. This book is invaluable to any student taking a social or critical componant to thier psychology degree; and to those psychology students who have never experienced a critical approach before, this book will help bring your studies into the twenty first century and open your eyes to a fresh new way of looking at the study of human behaviour
The best book of its kind on the market
This is an excellent introduction to a fast growing area. It covers a wide range of topics and the contributing authors are among the most well known critical psychologists active today. I have recently commenced teaching a third level university course in critical psychology. I have adopted this book as the core course text and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone interested in learning more about the role mainstream Psychology plays in maintaining the societal status quo.
Euch.....
Unless you have to read this for your studies or want to know how the left liberals think, don't waste your time on this. It takes a lot of things as given without ever stopping to explain why or even what they mean by it ('social justice' is a particularly annoying case in point).
For myself, this was particularly tiresome as I'm a conservative-type person (very religious, I'm told), and made no allowance for anyone who didn't share their views.
In short, this isn't a psychological textbook by any stretch of the imagination (even the stuff they say about the teaching of Watson and Rayner's 'Little Albert' study doesn't hold water when you check it against the article itself) and really brings into question the validity of Critical 'Psychology' as a discipline. It seems, to me at least, that this isn't a textbook, it's a political agenda hijacking an educational discipline.
But of course, this is mere opinion. In the end, it's your money to waste.
I mean spend, of course.
