A 'must-have' for your collection
Georgie's first hit came in '64 with the John Hendricks song 'Yeh! Yeh!', which went all the way to number 1 and, in the process, knocked The Beatles off the top spot - I remember it well! This 20 track compilation, which kicks-off with that very song, was originally released by Polydor in 1980 but was re-released in '92 and, in my humble opinion, it's an absolute BLINDER.
Some of my other favourites on this 'must-have' CD include; 'Getaway' (which he wrote), 'My Girl' (produced by Denny Cordell), 'Get On The Right Track, Baby', a righteous cover of 'Ride Your Pony', a knockout version of Bobby Hebb's classic song 'Sunny', a quality workout of the Booker T & The MG's stalwart 'Green Onions', 'In The Meantime', Georgie's stonkin' take on James Brown's ' Papa's Got A Brand New Bag' (a guaranteed floor-filler that gets played regularly at the clubnight I DJ at - "Vegas"), 'Pink Champagne', 'Let The Sunshine In', and 'I Love The Life I Live'.
Like the man himself, this is seriously cool and I thouroughly recommend this brilliant value-for-money compilation to everyone. Don't waste anymore time reading when you could be listening.

This reflects Georgie's style in the "Swinging London" era
This CD contains much of the material Georgie Fame played live in appearances at clubs like The Flamingo, Bromley Court etc when he was one of the mods' favourites. From his excellent rendition of John Hendrick's "Yeh Yeh", which became a number 1 hit, through material originally recorded by The Temptations, Lee Dorsey, Joe Hinton, Booker T, James Brown, Marvin Gaye and others, plus "Getaway" - another single release - this is a great record of Georgie Fame's mid-60's style
The swing's the thing
Georgie Fame could do little wrong from the moment he burst into the public consciousness with the no.1 hit, 'Yeh Yeh'. Not surprisingly, this collection of mid-1960s recordings opens with this and his follow-up chart-topper, 'Get Away'. These are among the poppier tracks, along with Bobby Hebb's 'Sunny' and 'Sitting In The Park', a languid, summery hit. All of the music contained here though is jazz-inflected r&b, led by Fame's organ, husky vocals and complemented by brass. Most of the tracks are uptempo and reflect a buoyant and exciting musical era. The album is a capsule of swinging Britain as we like to imagine it, even if the image isn't the truth. Perhaps the only mistake is the cover of 'Green Onions'. It's actually a good track in its own right, but against Booker T's awesome original doesn't stand a chance. James Brown fans might feel the same about 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag'. Nevertheless, this is a superb compilation. Significantly, it's been around since 1980.
