Customer Reviews
Loads and LOADS of rarities!!!!
First of all, if you're just wanting to buy ANOTHER 'best of' of the sixties compilation, then this one isn't really what you're looking for. However if you own just about everything that came out in that marvellous decade, and have even started giving your b-sides a spin (!) then you'll LOVE this collection.
Of course there a few Top 20 hits across these 3CDs, but the majority are rare songs that didn't reach the chart, or if they did they became either one-hit wonders or only scraped into the national Top 40.
The only downside of this collection is they could've slotted in some fantastic "pirate" advertisements or radio jingles, like another CD i bought off Amazon ("We Love the Pirates: Charting the "BIG-L" Fab 40") which is faultless ;)
Great sounding collection
Rockin' With The Pirates is EMIs attempt to cash in on the success of the film The Boat That Rocked. It has some competition from the film's original soundtrack CD and another collection, from Virgin Records, called 101 Pirate Radio Hits. EMI have put a bit more effort into this offering than Virgin did with theirs however.
This compilation only draws from EMIs catalogue so that rather limits the choice of material available to be included a bit, but EMI was a very major label during this era so there is still plenty of variety here. There are 3 CDs in the set with 25 tracks on each; Tim Chacksfield, whose name will be familiar to serious music fans, is the compiler and had the enviable tasks of trawling through EMIs vaults to find his favourite music from the Pirate Radio era.
Anyone who lived through that era themselves would probably have their own favourites so the selection here is very subjective. The banner says Big Hits, Classic Tracks & Lost Gems and they are all here. But I would really have liked more Lost Gems to have been included as a lot of the tracks featured here are easily available elsewhere, and a lot of people will own them already. However, I guess the real market for this CD is those looking for a tie in to the film and who may be new to the music from this era.
The CD sounds really good, much better than the 101 collection, and the tracks have been remastered by Peter Mew at Abbey Road studios. Some are remastered especially for this collection, others over the last few years for other projects; Amazon has a detailed track listing which gives much information on remaster dates and other information - also the chance to listen to samples, or to buy individual tracks.
Rockin' With The Pirates is completed by the inclusion of a small, non illustrated, booklet with information on the artists and music. This is annotated by Phil Smee, another name which will be familiar to music collectors, and is very informative - even sixties music fans may learn a few things here!
All in all a very nicely produced package which has been compiled by people who care about the music. The choice of tracks is obviously subjective and will suit some buyers more than others but, that aside, the care and attention to detail and sound quality make this a five star collection. A much better product than the 101 alternative.
Better Than The Usual 60's Compilation
Unlike the 101 Pirate Hits CD, this one hits the mark a little more with the inclusion of "Lost Gems". Out of the 75 tracks on this set, there's probably a dozen or so that I haven't got, so the purchase was worth it. But I would have given the release 5 stars if it had an extra disc with even more lost gems, and there are plenty of tracks that were played in Big L's Fab 40 that have not seen the light of day on CD.
Although I have all of the Big L jingles, (& some Caroline although not sure Caroline had that many anyhow), it would have been nice as previously mentioned in another review to have included some ads in this set as links between songs.
