Simple, humble, masterpiece.
If you are looking for a book that is completely engaging from page one to the very end, sit down, relax and enjoy the literary phenomenon that is Willie Hogg. Willie & Maggie Hogg are a couple of pensioners, shuffling through their latter years, living in low quality housing in gloomy, cold, grey Glasgow. Life is tough and money is tight, pleasures are simple and brief. When a letter arrives from America, their world is turned upside down. The tension and excitement caused merely by the postmark on the letter (before it is even opened) is superb and the chapter where Willie embarks on a journey to the travel agents is among one of the finest I have ever read. When the action moves to the arid emptiness of Arizona, the subtle characterisations suddenly become stark, as Willie struggles to apply Scottish sensibilities to an alien land. Buy it.
