Product Description

The lives of the Scottish queens, both those who ruled in their own right, and also the consorts, have largely been obscured and neglected. Rosalind K. Marshall addresses this oversight with a collection of mini-biographies, illuminating the fascinating lives of these unusual women, who all found themselves at the helm of a kingdom, and reacted in very different ways. One of the earliest known Scottish queens was none other than the notorious Lady MacBeth. Was she really the wicked woman depicted in Shakespeare's famous play? Was St Margaret a demure and obedient wife? Why did Margaret Logie exercise such an influence over her husband, David II, and have we underestimated James VI's consort, Anne of Denmark, frequently written off as a stupid and wilful woman? These are just a few of the questions addressed by Dr Marshall in her entertaining, scholarly study.

Scottish Queens Revealed5
An excellent book, uncovering the history of the hidden queens of Scotland. Full of depth and humour Marshall's depiction is of well rounded characters who played an important part in the life of their country. She also uncovers the status of women as a commodity and the harshness of their treatment but doesn't labour this, the casual nature of these comments, not part of the main narrative, emphasise their effect on the lives of Scotland's Queens

what a gem!5
What a little gem this book is! Being very interested in history,I was mortified to discover how little I knew about the Queens of Scotland. Most of us know about Mary Stuart, the most famous Scottish Queen, but information concerning other queens has, up to now, been rather sparse. This book puts that right, and now I know why the Shetland and Orkney Isles belong to Scotland.....
Eminently readable, this book provides fact in a most enjoyable way, with a great deal of insight into the queens lives and their marriages.
