Amazon.co.uk Review
Time to Fall is the long-awaited second solo album from Capercaillie's lead singer, and committed fans will be happy to know that it continues in much the same vein as her 1996 debut The Dreaming Sea.
Again it's an album of smooth, silky ballads with subtly programmed electronica and soothing strings courtesy of The BT Scottish Ensemble. There's little of Capercaillie's rhythmic rootsiness, even though most of the band are actually playing on it. Once more she relies heavily on the skills of Love And Money songwriter James Grant, who penned half of the 12 numbers. There are still nods to tradition in the musical setting of Robert Burns's poem "Bonnie Jean", and "Moch Di Luain" and "An Aitar Achd Ard" will keep fans of Matheson's celebrated Gaelic vocals happy. Michael McGoldrick's whistle adds to the subtle Celtic vibe as well. There's even a slightly jazzy flavour on "Moonchild" and "Speed Of Love", the latter with the memorably sensual whispered line: "The smell of gorse/Like coconut and peach".
Those looking for something a bit more challenging and angular are advised to stick to Capercaillie--you won't find any jigs or reels here. But if it's relaxing croonery from an indisputably beautiful voice and a gentle Caledonian ambience that you're looking for, or if you liked the first album, then this will appeal. --Jon Lusk
Customer Reviews
A sublime collection of songs!
This is Karen Matheson's second solo work, much more contemporary and laid back than her earlier (and excellent) 'Dreaming Sea' album. Most of the songs here are sung in english, though Matheson's celtic roots are well-represented in the 2 very stirring gaelic language tracks. What marks this collection is the sheer purity, grace and poise of Karen Matheson's singing voice (always a pleasure to listen to - search 'Capercaillie' for more of her work).
Also outstanding is the quality of all the songwriting, especially by James Grant (ex-Love and Money). His songs are always beautifully crafted, and his guitar playing superb. The backing is provided by some very able musicians, Neil Yates' trumpet-playing and the string arrangements by the BT Scottish Ensemble are particularly outstanding.
This second solo album comes 5 years after 'The Dreaming Sea', and is both 'chilled' and emotionally satisfying to listen to. For anyone who enjoys listening to Karen Matheson's fabulous singing voice, this is highly recommended!
Sweet Surprise
I love the voice of Karen Matheson especially as vocalist in the Scottish traditional folkband Capercaillie. She is particularly adept at her singing of songs in the Gaelic. The work on this album came as a complete surprise and a pleasant one at that. It demonstrates that she has even more facets to her considerable talent. The album seems to improve with each time one plays it. The CD is a fixture in my car essential collection.
Beautiful
A warm, relaxing and sophisticated recording from the delightful Karen Matheson. Her unique voice is crystal clear and a joy to listen to.
