Amazon.co.uk Review
Like most of R&B's finest talents (D'Angelo, Lynden David Hall, Erykah Badu, Chico Debarge, The Roots and Macy Gray--before she became a combined living legend and household name), Jill Scott doesn't fit neatly into any marketing game plan. The exquisitely chilled sounds of her aptly titled debut, Who Is Jill Scott?--one part jazzy-funk mixed with two parts slow and sexy hip-hop-inspired soul--defy tidy pigeonholes. Made from the same mould as Erykah Badu and Meshell Ndegéocello, Scott is blessed with a voice that flits between intimate spoken word love poetry and stirring melodies. Like D'Angelo, her grooves are a subtle blend of funked soul and sensual jazz. And, like all of the above, Scott sounds as if she means every sexually-charged word as she demands to know how her lover wants it on "It's Love", warns off the other woman with "Getting in the Way" and suggests an intimate encounter with "Long Walk". In fact, all that Who Is Jill Scott? lacks is the standout single that would make her the household name that she so deserves to be. --Dan Gennoe

DO BELIEVE THE HYPE!
It is not very often that I invest into new artists, however, after visiting this site and reading reviews of this album,I bought the album. I would have to say that It's been the biggest and best investment I've made in years! You see, Jill knows that we(my hip hop generation) is trying to grow up. You know mature a little without appearng too soft.I'm here to inform all who read this that Ms. Scott is the Queen of Hip Hop/Jazz/R&B. From beginning to end, this album lures you into a sense of comfort. I feel guilty if I don't get a chance to play it. The live musucians, the range of her voice, the smoothed out tunes have me engulfed with satsfaction everytime. The poetry is the exquisit. Its sexy but it hardly ever mentions sex. The music is so sexy that she could be singing about a video game and you'd still feel romantic. My favorite cut is #9 "THE WAY".Never mentions sex but it its the sexiest record I've heard all year. The bass guitar is the drink that soothes you until Jill's voice forces you to put down your guard, then it's too late! You are hooked!!! DO BELIEVE THIS HYPE PEOPLE! THIS IS A CLASSIC! NO SHE IS NOT THE NEXT BADU, SHE IS THE ONE AND ONLY JILL SCOTT! If I were to compare her to any of today's artists, it would be MAXWELL! YES MAXWELL!
Quality, quality and more quality...
That's all I've come to expect from Jill Scott.. Quality. I first heard tracks from this album whilst spending time at my counsin's home in London. Whilst stuffing my face with food in the kitchen it wasn't long before my interest switched from what I was eating to what I was hearing. Wow! All I knew was I had to get this album. If I had to beg, steal or borrow it was gonna be mine. Resisting the urge to just pocket it then and there I waited til my return to B'ham and bought my own copy. A very good decision. That album has seen me through thick and thin. Especially when stressed or ticked off I make sure I 'Take a Long Walk' with Jill Scott. From the first to the last track you can't help but feel refreshed. That's, Quality!
Unbelievable talent
I get home in the evening when it's dark and cold outside,I draw my curtains, light my candles, leave the TV OFF, I shower, put something comfortable on, have dinner, get a glass of red wine. Then I put Jill Scott's CD on and get ready for some knock out, mind blowing, conscious, positive, uplifting, spiritual and educational entertainment. Let me tell you that Jill Scott is all that and MORE. The sultry jazz lyrics, interspersed with a back drop of hip hop (AND I HATE HIP HOP) just leaves you weeping for more.
It is the type of music that you can listen to by yourself, with friends, with children, in the car or with someone special. It has something for everyone.
I cannot force you to go out and buy the c.d but if you don't you are seriously selling yourself short and depriving your ears of some truly magical music. Since reading about her in Essence magazine a few months ago I have not looked back.
Jill Scott - I salute you !!!!
