Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review:
In a nutshell:
Splinter Cell returns with an all-new story of double-dealing terrorists and uncomfortable moral decisions. Its greatest new feature though is its multiplayer, which continues to expand into the definitive online stealth experience.

The lowdown:
You can only imagine that Sam Fisher must get a good pension, because he doesn’t seem to have an easy life. This time his role as a double agent in a terrorist group forces him to constantly make difficult moral choices, from big set piece decisions on whether to execute hostages to simple choices in-game such as whether to help out civilians. Although there are few significant changes to the controls this time around, for once most of the game doesn’t take place in the dark. Stealth is still paramount though, especially since two onscreen trust meters track whether you’re still in favour with both the terrorists and the NSA. The terrorist base also acts as a sort of hub world which you keep returning to between missions and slowly explore and unlock as the game’s story unfurls.

Most exciting moment:
The expanded Spies vs. Mercenaries multiplayer game now has even less connection to the single player campaign, with the spies using only hand-to-hand combat and moving much faster than Sam Fisher. It now supports a total of six players at once and is one of the few online action games to offer a genuine alternative to the normal first person deathmatches.

Since you ask:
The next Splinter Cell game is subtitled Conviction and is due out some time next year. Controversially it has been announced as an Xbox 360 and PC exclusive only, with no PlayStation 3 or Wii versions currently scheduled.

The bottom line:
The best Splinter Cell yet, particularly in multiplayer mode.-HARRISON DENT

Another Excellent Outing for Fisher5
You're Sam Fisher, a secret agent (Splinter Cell) employed by the NSA to investigate terrorism, weapons threats, deals etc. The game starts with you in Iceland, investigating an arms deal, but your called out before completing your objectives-it's your daughter... She's dead. You don't care anymore, about anything much, and you take on the toughest assignment of your career. Your going to investigate a terrorist group from the inside, by becoming one of them, but your an agent at the same time. How do you keep both parties happy you double agent?

So, as you can see, the Storys there, and thats all in the first mission! So, what about the graphics? Once again, Splinter Cells lighting effects are some of the best I've seen on the PS2. The light trickles through the windows and there is a constant reliance on lighting for the stealth to become essential. The enemies look and move in a realistic manner and the levels are great, from the frozen icecaps of Iceland, to the prison you'll end up in. Excellent graphics.

The gameplay has been tweaked too-again there is no, 3 strikes and your out from the first two games, but too many alarms mean increased security making your job harder. Again you have front attacks, and rear attacks (stealthy ones.) You can attack from a ledge, to being in water and pulling your enemy in. So no change really. The emphasis again is on stealth, do your job without being seen. So sneak up and take out. The new addition is the use of a co-worker. There are sections of the game where the computer will assign another person with you (Computer controlled) and you'll be able to give basic instructions (stay, follow etc) to help you with the game. Most importantly, your friend can help you up onto unaccessible ledges, but it's a nice touch. Secondly, is the fact that some missions will have objectives you must fulfill for both groups, so you must either choose a side (terrorists or NSA) or try and please both-this is all up to you! Excellent touches like this continue to give life to a brilliant franchise.

Once again there is an online mode and co-op mode, a good variety of missions and this will please any fan or any newcomer really. It's definately one of the games to buy. I recommend it heartily to anyone.

Fisher is back and better!5
There are many stealth-based games on the market and the Splinter Cell series is undoubtedly the best, but Double Agent boasts something that none of the others can- playing for both the American government and a terrorist organisation called the JBA. It all starts on a mission to Iceland, where it is discovered that five deadly `Red Mercury' devices have been stolen and several devastating attacks on US soil have been planned. After a personal tragedy, Sam Fisher takes on his most risky mission yet- working undercover in the terrorist group that plan to use the Red Mercury. However, he has to play both sides, otherwise he risks the JBA discovering his true intentions or the government thinking he's in too deep.

This is where the important decision-making comes in, and it always comes with its consequences. For example, do you let a bomb go off and please the terrorists or tamper with the trigger and save 2000 lives, whilst risking the JBA's distrust? Trust is important in the game and there is a trust bar showing which organisation trusts you the most. It is best to keep it balanced, but your actions affect how trusted you are, with later decisions having the lives of your fellow operatives at stake.

Concerning equipment, everything is there from the previous games (pistol, rifle, attachments, grenades, etc). However, there are some new aspects to your gadgets. The EMP ammunition is a new device that can be launched from your rifle, and instead of only being inoperative for a short time, this permanently disables electrical equipment such as cameras, lights or turrets. For certain missions where you have to investigate the JBA's headquarters, there is a new pistol available (called the SC-303 Compact Launcher) that can only fire non-lethal ammunition like rubber bullets and tranquilliser darts.

As with all Splinter Cell games, the mission locations vary from all over the world- and Double Agent is no exception. Levels see Sam commandeering a land-locked oil tanker in snowy Russia, to escaping from an American prison, as well as infiltrating a cruise ship in Mexico. In my opinion, it would have been better if there were one or two more maps in the solo campaign, but nether the less, the nine missions are still top quality. The final level set in New York is perhaps one of the best. Also, Double Agent removes the mission rating system seen in previous Splinter Cell titles, which removes some re-playability as on the prior games, you could strive to obtain the 100% score. This game also introduces two bonus maps to play and this is a nice new feature to add. These take place before the solo campaign and are exciting to play- whether you're eliminating every hostile on a ship or escaping a bunker whilst you are suffering from being drugged.

Overall, with its new features this game adds a bit more originality than the other games in the Splinter Cell series. It is heart pounding to play and has perhaps the most gripping storyline of a stealth game to date.

Splinter Cell: Double Agent5
I bought this game two days ago and had been waiting for it since feb 06, now that i have it i can say that it was worth the wait. The first level starts the story but you do not encounter any double agent decisions until the second level in prison. From here on you have a list of primary, opposing and opportunity objectives. Which ever group has set you the objectives will honour you with their trust. The trust bar can be accessed by your PDA or you can wait for it to appear when you complete an objective. If you do too many terrorist objectives the NSA becomes suspicious of you and will restrict the amount of equipment you start a level with. Do too many NSA objectives and the Terrorists will make you prove your loyalty in set-timed objectives, which usually include having to execute an innocent person.

This game received 5 stars because for the first time ever in a Splinter Cell game i felt very conflicted by what i should do and also the events that take place throughout the game are very emotional and you really feel the writers made an effort this time. As in Chaos Theory the cut-scenes were very detailed and life like, Double Agent takes this to the next level, it looks like a movie.

If you're an avid splinter cell player you'll love this because there is still a strong stealth based play in the missions but there is more action sequences entwined in the levels. If you have never played a splinter cell game but are attracted to the concept then you may like this.
