Memories memories!
Like most people who would buy this I was looking for some nostalgia and to see again people who either look very different now (just like I do!) or haven't been on tv very much since those sunny days way back then. Nostalgia is here by the bucket full and the first viewing of some episodes since more years than I care to remember was a nice way to lose a rainy evening! But on second viewing, I felt frustrated that the episodes were on their own. Why can't the producers of this do a couple of consecutive episodes or really spoil us and do three, or perhaps do what the makers of Coronation Street did and do a selection of a year? The continuity would make it so much more enjoyable instead of being served odd little portions of a very big pie.
More please!
While any release of Neighbours on DVD should probably be duly applauded, frankly I have my misgivings about this meagre collection. Imagine if the works of Beethoven were known to us solely via a condensed album of his most popular moments (such as 'Fur Elise', the finale of the ninth symphony and the 'Grosse Fugue')! Imagine if the great Bard of Stafford-upon-Avon were represented within the literary archives by a single volume of familiar speeches- robbed of any context within their respective plays! How could a reader even begin to unlock the innermost layer of spiritual profundity that is implicit within the "To be or not to be" monologue, without having first appreciated its role within the overall framework of 'King Lear'? Those who would seriously claim that Neighbours is of less historical importance than the works of Beethoven or Shakespeare are just small-minded cultural elitists who do not deserve to have a voice within our classless society.
Anyhow, just what is the point in presenting a few random episodes outside of their relevant position within the finely-chiselled arc of the overriding story? Surely it is now time to start releasing the COMPLETE and UNEDITED back catalogue- in order to fully contextualise such unforgettable moments as Bouncer's dream and the painting of Mrs Mangle?! Ideally, the discs should include director's commentaries, cast interviews and hilarious outtakes of actors fluffing their lines (and walking into doors etc.). Multi-lingual subtitles would also be a good idea, enabling the whole world to enjoy the project as one (although any dubbing over the original dialogue would most certainly NOT be acceptable). Ideally, the original footage should be digitally re-mastered and issued in high-definition, although, if one is entirely honest, there may not be sufficient demand for a blu-ray release to be commercially viable. Still, realistically speaking, I have high hopes for a regular DVD box-set of the back-catalogue, which (give or take a couple of hundred) would consist of a thousand discs- in order to house 5500+ episodes to date.
PS. Unfortunately my petition for a Government subsidy of the project has been rejected by no. 10's website- under the grounds that it is "intended to be humorous, or has no point about government policy". What a triumph for democracy! The Government may consider this to be a laughing matter, but I struggle to see the funny side when it comes to their blase attitudes towards the preservation of our heritage. The petition has still gone ahead, however, hosted on a different site. If you feel as strongly as I do, please make yourself heard here!

Memory Lane - Ramsey Street
Primarily brought as a sentimenal trip down memory lane. However, although this contain some episodes that I remember watching when I was younger. It sort of feels a little out of place.
