George's First4
"Boots! Boots!" is not one of the classic Formby films you are likely to remember from days when the BBC showed black and white films a lot more often than they do now. Compared with the slick films Fred Astaire was making in the USA in the 1930s, the quality of this film looks very poor - and indeed, apparently the budget for the whole film was only £3000. However, this is an historic film as it was George Formby's first film (excluding the film By The Shortest of Heads, which probably no longer exists). The best thing about this film is the fact that the character he plays is basically the first appearance of the character he was to play in all of his films - albeit called John Willie here - which is why it is worth buying this DVD if you like George Formby. The songs he sings are as good as ever, the humour is entertaining, the story is simple and gentle though not brilliantly written, and there are some genuinely funny scenes. I get the impression that this was a cheaply made film to promote some of the local talent as a few people have a turn in the film (including Beryl Formby dancing) but it is George who holds the film together with his 'daft but knowing' character. In my opinion George was an excellent actor - his character may have been very similar in all his films, but he played it very well. This film was cheaply made so the quality of the film is variable ,and the camera work was very basic, but the quality of the DVD could not be better. The fact that "lost" scenes have been rediscovered and added to the film adds to the appeal of this film. I am hoping that if enough people buy this film, others will also be released on DVD - which would be fitting, as George Formby was one of our great comedians and actors from the 1930s and 1940s.
