Synopsis
"Tantra" is generally associated with the esoteric use of power and sex, mysterious rituals undertaken by initiates, wrathful gods and goddesses, as well as breathtakingly beautiful mandalas, deeply moving chants intoned by brocade-draped Tibetan monks to the syncopated rhythms of bells and drums. This book masterfully succeeds in clarifying the nature of tantric practice. The author does not seek to explain away the undeniably evocative and potent language and imagery of tantra but to recognize them as transformative symbols of the rich complexity of our own inner lives. In contrast to the approaches of conventional religion, tantra does not attempt to soothe the turmoil of existence with consoling promises of heaven and salvation. The tantric practitioner chooses to confront the bewildering and chaotic forces of fear, aggression, desire, and pride, and to work with them in such a way that they are channeled into creative expression, loving relationships, and wisely engaged forms of life.
Customer Reviews
Excellent approach to a much explained field.
There are so many books on Tantra it is often difficult to know what to buy and what to read. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for both an excellent introduction as well as a more in depth explanation of this difficult subject. Perhaps it is because Rob is trained in western psychology that he presents such a good balance between a standard eastern training manual and a dry western academic text.
His artistry in depicting some of the deities is extremely skillful and very inspiring.
Psychology of Buddhist Tantra
The correct title of this book is Psychology of Buddhist Tantra. Somehow Amazon listed it with a wrong subtitle. It is a revised and updated edition of The Alchemical Buddha that was self-published by the author in the UK. Snow Lion Publications published it in 2006. It is very well written.
great stuff shame about the title
This is great stuff, excellent explanations for new & more experienced students.
The title however, doesn't show that the book exists as "Alchemical Buddha"
by another publisher.
Such a useful book, but I don't need it twice.
