Synopsis
Richard Sharpe (Sean Bean), a British officer, and his men risk life and limb in an attempt to foil Napoleon's forces in Spain in this period action drama. Taken from Bernard Cornwall's novels, this film was shot on location in Portugal, Great Britain and Crimea, and condensed from the popular British television series.

Sharpe's Rifles
Sharpe's Rifles was the first of the television adaptations of Bernard Cornwell's books. It was made before the new series of India based novels and so doesn't quite link up with them storywise. In this Sharpe starts out as a sargeant and saves Wellington's life to get his commission whereas in the novels this happened earlier in India. It differs slightly from the novel in other ways too but retains the same basic storyline so I guess it was at the time a compromise on the writers behalf to introduce Sharpe and bring him up from the ranks.
The adaptation seems a little dated now compared to the newer episodes and was obviously shot on a tight budget. This doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment though and it is still highly recommended for all Sharpe fans.
