Customer Reviews

Put this record on, it's really good5
What a throaty but delicious voice young Corinne has. I heard her on late night TV recently and I was surprised that I really liked how she sang, not only that, I liked the songs she was singing too!

I loved the song Put Your Records On, it was so charming and surreal and Trouble Sleeping was equally as good, not only that but both the videos were eye catching and very 1940s to 1950s to look at with bike rides in the country and visits to a basement jazz hall by a sultry looking Corinne who reminded me of a 21st century Nina Simone.

All the songs on this Album are pretty good, Corinne has done very well for one so young, and I look forward to watching her mature, I just hope she doesn't become too full of herself, I think if she does, she will loose some of the sparkling charm which makes her a cut above other artists of a similar ilk.

Corinne Bailey Rae has impressed me here4
I had bypassed this album numerous times either in stores or here online. I really wasn't going to pick this up till an Amazonian friend recommended this album to me. Bailey Rae, to me, seems very retro but still contemporary, to the point that she's hard to tie down to one genre. She entails colorful, thoughtful lyrics that ache of love not quite there, balance by youthful optimism with a hint of disappointment. While listening to this I also realize that she's weaker on up tempos but stronger on ballads.

On this project the tracks that stood out to me are "Enchantment" owed to its smooth jazz tempo, "Trouble Sleeping" with it's R&B/pop ballad, "Breathless" due to its beautiful tempo as well as "Like A Star" and "Butterfly", with the last one not only being the best of the bunch, but the one that ultimately showcases Bailey Rae's lyrics. The single, "Put Your Records On", is one great mid-tempo ditty that's easy to sing along to, but certainly lacks some of the depth of the other material. The lyrics on this one trumpet free spirited innocence and self-discovery, but don't really say much more than you've heard before from similar artists. To her credit, she maintains a good consistency throughout this album by using one main producer.

However, as a singer, her voice can sometimes get lost in busier arrangements, if she's not careful. Her delivery, while dripping with personality, can lack an intensity that a vocalist needs to command the ear of the listener. On "Call Me When You Get This", one of few up tempos, the track almost runs her over which you can find yourselves bored by whatever she's singing about. Hopefully, with her stardom, record company, and those in her corner they will allow her to stay the path set before her and give her the time and space to continue to mature and flourish.

Her self-titled album is certainly worth the price of admission for those seeking well crafted contemporary soul. At the end of this note, I too recommend this album.
