A brilliant second series
Series 2 of 'One Foot In The Grave' begins when Victor Meldrew (Richard Wilson) and his wife Margaret (Annette Crosbie) return from their holiday in Athens to find that their house has been burnt down and demolished. After several months of arguments with insurance companies, the couple then move into their new home down the road, living next door to Nick Swainey (Owen Brenman) and his bed-ridden (and unseen by the viewer) mother, and Peter and Pippa Trench (Angus Deayton & Janine Duvitski) on their other side.
Throughout the 6 absolutely hilarious episodes in series 2, Victor manages to cremate a live tortoise, have a house-warming party in the wrong house, write a script and also show off his ventriloquist skills. In addition to the 6 episodes is the hour-long 1990 Christmas special on the bonus disc, which is equally as funny as the series itself, adding a little more extra value for money.
Again this is yet another essential DVD purchase that is also one of the funniest British comedies of all time and a show that can be watched over and over again. This series also goes for a bit more darker humour, focussing on matters such as death and murder, but the outcome is overall still very, very funny.
I do believe it!
Victor and his wife come home from holiday to find their home ruined and the neighbours less than happy to see them home. Not quite the best beginning to a comedy series, but somehow the writers of this excellent series (and Christmas special) have managed to tame some of the anarchism of the first series and mould it into the shape of things to come.
Moving into their new home, they encounter Angus Deayton and Janine Duvitski (alias Patrick and Patricia), the inspired additions to the Meldrews' lives who provide a useful foil for Victor's irascibility. Mr Sweeney (who seems to have driven the previous occupant to suicide with his over-enthusiasm for assisting the elderly) is a retread from series one. The series - daringly for an early episode - goes into dialogue mode when Victor and Margaret spend a sleepless night carping at one another. (Annette Crosbie always managed to give as good as she got, though she always seemed to come off as the innocent victim of Victor's tirades).
The best storyline is reserved for the 1990 hour-long Christmas special, where Victor mellows enough after hearing of a family tragedy which he may have exacerbated to assist at a homeless shelter with a vicar who has lost his faith (father to Patricia). A mix-up with wine, presents and 200 garden gnomes provokes the silliness.
A welcome relief from politically correct post-modern comedies made nowadays. I always live in hope that someday someone might rediscover the art of writing a simple sitcom like One Foot. Until then - more DVDs, please!!!!
Worth a new DVD player
Yes, I bought myself a multiregion DVD player in order to enjoy this wonderfully brilliant series because it looks as though it will never be released for region one in North America. At the end of the day, I'm just glad to have this terrific comedy to enjoy over and over. Good scripts, great acting and laughs that keep coming. One of the best of the BritComs.
