Laurens van der Post shared a deep-rooted attachment to Europe, Africa and Japan and this book is a testament to his commitment to writing and initiating cultural and political commentaries on the issues and personalities of his time. "A Walk with a White Bushman" brings together his conversations with Jean-Marc Pottiez. The result is a book brimming with ideas, insights, people and events; at once thoughtful and exciting, mellow yet full of promise, autobiographical but also topical.

Profound insights into the mind of a very remarkable man
This book started out life as an idea for a radio programme series - interviews with Laurens van der Post - but transformed itself into a transcription of those tapes, to yield an extremely valuable guide for people like me. Through the stories he has written, Laurens van der Post has given us a beautiful way to look at the world - in a way similar to Antoine de Saint-Exupery. But since this book is not WRITTEN by him, we get the raw ideas, that which is at the core of his stories - the ideas which all weave together to enable plots and characters to blossom. Here, then, is the essence, the core message of all his novels, plain to see in a single sentence.
As a result, it is quite heavy reading. If you want ideas that will resonate with your vibrant sense of life and beauty, then here is a book for you. He discusses his childhood in Africa, his years in the Second World War, his thoughts on Jung(psychologist), his life in England, his involvement with the League of Nations.
His use of words is exceptional. For each question he is asked, there follows four or five pages of thoughts. The questions are intelligent, the answers enlightening, always going far beyond the scope of the original question.
This is a great book. Read it. It will sharpen your wits, open your eyes, open your heart. One cannot help but feel life is too short for all there is yet to be done.
This man is the God of literature
The heading says it all. If you enjoy reading literature that blows you away - literature that you have to re-read each sentence because it is too stunning to believe possible - then Van der Post is your man. I won't devalue this by outlining the book - that would be like the medical student evaluating the brain surgeon. Just buy it! Trust me, all his work is...is beyond reviewing..
