	The Master and Margarita (Harvill Panther) by Mikhail Bulgakov Buy used from: £2.49 A whirlwind visit to Moscow by the Devil and his entourage makes for a clever allegory of life and liberty under communism. Make sure you read the Harvill translation, it's the best one.
	The Ice Storm [VHS] [1998] Buy used from: £0.01 Fumbling adolescent passion juxtaposed with the emotional chill of middle age. The icily minimalist setting provides a stunning backdrop to this thought-provoking film.
	Secrets of the Flesh: a Life of Colette by Judith Thurman Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01 A meaty insight into the life, loves and attitudes of this unconventional style-setter as she wrestles with issues such as sexuality, motherhood, creativity and getting old in a man's world.
	Beyond Skin by Nitin Sawhney Buy new: £11.98 / Used from: £5.48 A relaxing Anglo-Indian compilation of voices, instruments, music styles and sounds make this CD a pleasure to read, daydream or just clean the house to.
	Bobby Fischer Goes to War by David Edmonds Buy new: £14.24 / Used from: £0.01 The John McEnroe of US chess meets his Russian counterpart for a Cold War-style showdown. A new twist on Fischer's bloody-minded genius and Spassky's individualism given world politics at the time.
	Songbird by Eva Cassidy Buy new: £9.88 / Used from: £1.49 A selection of classics (such as Autumn Leaves and Fields Of Gold) delivered by this pure and captivating voice. The CD's written intro tells of Cassidy's gentle nature and premature death at 33.
	The Feast of the Goat by Mario Vargas Llosa Buy used from: £3.14 Charts, in novel form, the real life uprising against Dominican Republican dictator General Rafael Trujillo and the US's cackhanded attempts to control it. As relevant today as it ever was...
	Arabian Sands (Travel Library) by Wilfred Thesiger Buy used from: £8.42 Overlook his misogyny and enjoy Thesiger's chronicle of his travels through the Arabian peninsula's Rub al Khali desert with the Beduin tribes. Worth checking out his photos too. Hauntingly beautiful.
	Radio Romance by Garrison Keillor Buy used from: £0.01 A lesser-known Keiller novel with a hilarious tale of a start-up radio station. Genuinely laugh-out-loud stuff.
	Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout Buy new: £6.88 / Used from: £2.15 An all-time classic from the 1980s with gentle beats and intelligent lyrics. Track 4, When Love Breaks Down, tugs on the heartstrings.
	Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter by Mario Vargos Llosa Buy new: £5.96 / Used from: £0.01 Another radio show book, this time set in Peru and charting the rites-of-passage experiences of a teenage boy with an older woman and an eccentric playwright.
	Cinema Paradiso (Subtitled) [VHS] [1989] Buy used from: £1.39 A gem of a film based in Sicily about a little boy's obsession with the cinema. Tender, beautiful and gentle. Hollywood, look and learn.
	The Hotel New Hampshire (Black Swan) by John Irving Buy new: £6.71 / Used from: £0.01 Classic Irving with this funny, poignant tale about an eccentric American family. Flatulence-ridden Sorrow the dog's role in the grandfather's death is a corker.
	Doctor Zhivago [VHS] [1965] Buy used from: £0.01 A lengthy epic with fabulous dresses, champagne balls, horse-drawn sleighs and snowy Russian wastelands. Get a bottle of red wine and curl up on the sofa with the tissues for this one.
	Blue Lines by Massive Attack Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.85 Great dub beat tracks for an evening in.
	The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver Buy new: £4.49 / Used from: £0.01 A 1950s missionary family settle in Congo. A tale of survival of the fittest and most adaptable.
