Review
'Next to Freud, no psychiatrist of today has advanced our insight into the nature of the psyche more than he has.... At times he reaches a height and magical many-sidedness of observation that arouses our wonder.' - Hermann Hesse 'This is a very important book indeed.' - J.B. Priestley

‘This is a very important book indeed.’ – J.B. Priestley
In The Undiscovered Self Jung explains the essence of his teaching for a readership unfamiliar with his ideas. He highlights the importance of individual responsibility and freedom in the context of today’s mass society, and argues that individuals must organize themselves as effectively as the organized mass if they are to resist joining it. To help them achieve this he sets out his influential programme for attaining self-understanding and self-realization. The Undiscovered Self is a book that will awaken many individuals to the new life of the self that Jung visualized. First published in English: 1958.

Far ahead of his time.
As relevant in todays world of mass marketing and mass production as it was when it was written this volume examines man's relationship with and separation from his social surroundings and questions how much our environment shapes and controls the way we think. Jungs theories of the collective versus the individual are eye opening. One of many arguments that struck me was that the denial of a spiritual self is really a backlash against organised religion. He finally convinced this once hardened agnostic that to truly have an open mind requires accepting and living with an open soul.
Remarkable insight
Not the first of Jung's works that I encountered, but the one that made me love his stuff; the work that actually reached inside me and changed my relationship to the world.
If I took nothing else from it, I would hope I will never forget the line "...the predominant characteristic of the individual case is irregularity." That's the heart and soul of all Jung's teachings, in my opinion.
His ideas of how western culture has written human beings out of existence as mere marginal phenomonon, and the crucial and potentially crippling mistake this represents, is a timely warning that goes to heart of rational thought.
This is a remarkable work; it should be required reading in every western citizen.
Carl Gustav Jung's most accessible work!
The Undiscovered Self: Answers to Questions Raised by the Present World Crisis is Carl Gustav Jung's most accessible book. Although written at the time of the cold war, his thoughts on the individual, religion and the state are as relevant today as they were then. It is a superb introduction to one of the greatest psychologists and philosophers of the 20th century and as it is so short and snappy, should be on everyone's reading list!
